Vigil to be held in memory of Orlando victims

Monday June 13 2016

Barnsley Town Hall Barnsley Town Hall

A VIGIL will be held outside Barnsley Town Hall tomorrow in memory of the 50 people killed in the Orlando shootings.

Gunman Omar Mateen opened fire in the early hours of Sunday morning (June 12) at the Pulse nightclub, killing 49 before turning the gun on himself. The attack also left 53 people injured.

It is the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history.

Locals are being urged to join the vigil tomorrow (Tuesday, June 14), organised by the Barnsley LGBT forum, and bring a candle to light in memory of those killed.

It will take place at 5.45pm.

I honestly think this is such a great idea and I'm so happy to see us come together as a community and pay respect and honour the lives that have been lost. Such a sad week with so many things going off in the world. It's sad to see how some people cannot let people just be what they want and do what they want. Why resort to violence and gun crime to harm innocent people? America really needs to have a good think about the laws and have them changed to protect each other. It's what we need to do, love and protect each other. Although it's very hard for everyone to do that, but it'd be nice.

Well done Barnsley, so proud that we've done this. It's so awesome. X

I frequently feel exasperated by my home town and the level of sexism, racism and homophobia I see on a regular basis. Very proud that this event has been organised and hope it is well supported by everyone. Hate and intolerance will ultimately lose out to compassion and love and I hope my hometown shows that the voices of aggression and hate are actually the minority.
