FOUR of Barnsley’s most famous people will receive the honorary Freedom of the Borough on Tuesday.

Poet Ian McMillan, folk singer Kate Rusby, former Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire David Moody and Egyptologist Joann Fletcher will receive the honour at a ceremony at the town hall.

The title of Honorary Freeman is granted to people of distinction who, in the opinion of the council, have rendered eminent service to the borough.

It was last awarded in 2007 to Lord Roy Mason of Barnsley.

Hog wash! Compleat waste of money. Never heard of Moody or Fletcher. The other 2 get where water can't! I'm sure there are more deserving people? Why not ask the public what they want??

Who, to the majority of the Barnsley public these are just z list celebs who nobody gives a monies about. To the small Barnsley elite in their ivory towers they are special people.Trouble is not many of the Barnsley elite are either from Barnsley or inhabit the same Barnsley as the rest of us.

If this is the best weve got it doesn't say much for the town.. Kipper Jackson is better known than this lot.! Still it will provide an excuse to dish out some freebies at the tax-payers expense, AGAIN.!
