Council confirms school holiday changes

Monday May 23 2016

Barnsley Council Barnsley Council

BARNSLEY COUNCIL has confirmed the term times and holiday dates for the 2017/2018 academic year, with key changes made.

2017/2018 will see a shorter summer break - reduced to four weeks and four days - and a two week break at October half-term.

October half-term in 2017 will run from Monday, 23 October to Friday, 3 November.

The summer holiday in 2018 will run from Tuesday, 31 July.

The council says the changes follow consultation with neighbouring South Yorkshire authorities, and trade union/teacher associations as well as further feedback and comments received from head teachers.

Coun Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for People (Achieving Potential), said: “The main differences to this year’s dates from previous years - the shorter summer break and a two week break at October half-term - will support educational outcomes for pupils by reducing the long summer break which can lead to learning loss. It also means that holiday weeks are distributed more evenly throughout the school year.”

Governors of voluntary aided schools and academies are responsible for determining their own dates.

Having an extra week in October isn't bennifitting partners who wish to go on holiday! Why not a next week in June Octobers no good to no one!

Reply Posted by Jane on Monday May 23 2016 at 13:01
Where was the parents feedback?? As always left in dark and worked round the staff!! So not only will kids be indoors for October break the will be in for 2 weeks now as the weather sucks in October GREAT

Reply Posted by Kerry on Monday May 23 2016 at 13:02
I think 5 wks in the summer is a great idea. How ever I think the wk what will be added to October should be moved to the spring time which would be ideal for families who would like to holiday in this country or abroad, or even add the wk to May June holiday.

What are the playing at . Why was the parents not asked what would be better for us. Always the same never consider parents what about the ones that work and have child care etc

Reply Posted by Patricia Toseland on Monday May 23 2016 at 13:47
So four weeks in summer. Travel firms will be charging even more. Who'd want to go on holiday in October !!!! No thinking behind this. All children going on holiday in summer four weeks. Are you sponsored by holiday firms. I'm a retired teacher and long summer holidays have never effected kids education just like holidays in school time. Have you actually consulted teachers on this. They are trained. What do you know about educating children !!!!! Nnnn

IMHO the October half term would be better starting on Monday 16 October. The weather should be okay for those wishing to take a holiday in this country.

Reply Posted by Michelle on Monday May 23 2016 at 13:51
An extra week in October went it dark and wet NO Give and extra week at Spring bank when if light and nice weather but 4 week in summer instead of 6 would help with cost of holidays as it still would be high.

Moan Moan Moan. That's what happens when people don't use there vote.BMBC no consultation no parent involvement. But there again that's what Barnsley people do all the time.

Another Town Hall Ditatatership decision for the LABOUR VOTING muppets of Barnsley.

children's holidays should be in Summer, if people want to go abroad with cheaper flight prices we shouldn't be penalise children who's parents can not afford to take them abroad by giving them holidays in October when the weather is not suitable for outdoor play after all we are in a catchment area where childhood obesity is.
Thanks for reading Claire

I think the extra week should be added to the spring holiday and have 2wks then instead of October when its rubbish weather.

Reply Posted by Ex-teacher on Monday May 23 2016 at 15:59
The extra week cannot be added to the Spring half term as it would interfere with GCSE exams which take place across the whole country at that time. October has presumably been chosen as the Autumn term is usually the longest. I live in Barnsley but my children go to school in Wakefield, it will be strange having different holidays.

Reply Posted by Julie Garner on Monday May 23 2016 at 16:22
How sad for the children to loose a week in summer when it's nice and sunny and light nights. I hope parents make a big stink over this stupid idiotic idea ! Like many have said move the week to spring Plzzzz

Reply Posted by Mike on Monday May 23 2016 at 16:33
Ridiculous. What's the point in two weeks in October. It's dark at 4pm, cold, wet and horrid. Why not two weeks in June half term instead like holyrood school do. At least then we have have a chance of some decent weather. Typical BMBC not consulting parents and not taking any notice of the seasons. The kids will love sitting inside for two weeks instead of one because of the rubbish October weather. Congratulations BMBC yet another monumental cock up

Will the academy schools have to use the same holidays as the council have set above ?

Reply Posted by NS on Monday May 23 2016 at 19:56
Hi Gill, Academies have the freedom to set their own holidays they don't have to use the LA dates.

Reply Posted by Doris on Monday May 23 2016 at 16:39
Well done to the last 3 posters for referring to the people involved as CHILDREN NOT KIDS!!! Kids are the offspring of GOATS not humans!! But going by the spelling by most on here perhaps they are goats??? If you didnt vote the other day to try and oust the present incumbents, you have only yourselves to blame? You voted for sheep so that's what you got!!! Will you people never learn? It's time we went back to 9am until 4 pm with one and a half hours for lunch!!! The teachers and the children couldn't cope with that. The fact that parents havnt been consulted says it all really, just shows how unimportant you really are when it comes down to it?

Reply Posted by CM on Monday May 23 2016 at 16:44
The reason they put the extra week on the October holiday is because the term from September to Christmas is usually a very long one... It needs breaking up. But, I also see the point of having more time in the spring as well, but as someone rightly said above, the interference to exams would be too much.

Someone above moaned at teachers for this... Trust me, not our fault. If I had my way I would love to have the same holidays as my kids, but that won't be the case of this goes ahead, as I work in a different area to my kids' school.

And I think also that the issue of holiday prices is not really the point here... It won't make any difference. Not that I have ever been able to take time out to get a cheap holiday... My holidays have to be in the school holidays.

Oct extra wk bit nuts for holiday unless ya over seas.. and if come out E U no holidays abroad unless cheap as chips..so extra holz in the may june wud b betta and think wat wud it hurt if parents had a choice and help from teachers too ask bfor ya jump that way we can say we hav had our say for our own kids education thanx

This will be much better for the kids 6wks has always been too long

Reply Posted by Debs` on Monday May 23 2016 at 17:35
2 weeks in June would be better than 2 weeks in October.

Reply Posted by Jan on Monday May 23 2016 at 17:47
Won't this make it incredibly difficult for businesses to accommodate holiday requests in the four weeks for all their staff who have children? I remember it was always a struggle for working parents to get their holidays when the children were off school. This plan just compounds that issue in my view.

Reply Posted by Kathy on Monday May 23 2016 at 17:56
I don't think it should have been changed. The six week holidays have never affected my child's learning.
I agree with October being a rubbish idea because of the weather and in my opinion it is the worse holiday where children get really bored.
Summer holidays are fun for them, sun, light nights means a lot of cheap family days in the garden.

The parents should have been asked!! They deserve a say in this.

Reply Posted by Kelly pickets on Monday May 23 2016 at 18:31
I think this is absolutely great, any reduction in the length of the summer holidays is a welcome one for parents who work

Reply Posted by Nina on Monday May 23 2016 at 18:43
I think 2 weeks in October is a good idea and the pass couple of years weather has been good in October the summer holls is far too long

Reply Posted by Jane peake on Monday May 23 2016 at 18:59
Rubbish them holidays mess it up for parents

Reply Posted by Jill on Monday May 23 2016 at 19:27
Absolutely out of order for parents not to be consulted about this. 5 weeks in summer (which I presume is what 4 weeks & 4 days will hopefully end up being) isn't too bad but an extra week in October going through to a wet & cold mid November is no good to anyone. Maybe the week before Oct 1/2 term would be more acceptable. This is going to cause chaos for people who want to holiday with family & friends not in Barnsley & childcare problems for anyone working in the education sector out of the Barnsley area. Not helpful at all!

I work in a school in Rotherham and live in barnsley so my daughter goes to school in Barnsley. So why cant all hols be same then everyone will be off at the same time.

Reply Posted by Ray on Monday May 23 2016 at 19:55
Oh dear Doris. If you are going to judge people on their command of written english you may wish to check your own error ridden post first.

On another note I presume if you have offspring you refer to them as your kids? You probably should as you seem to be a vitriolic old goat.

Reply Posted by Bev on Monday May 23 2016 at 20:08
Clearly the councillors who voted this don't have kids still at school because surely they're living in cuckoo land! 2 week at October surely this would be better at Spring bank?

Reply Posted by Claire on Monday May 23 2016 at 20:24
I don't think this is worked around the staff. As a parent and member of staff I would have much preferred it adding on to may rather than October too.

Reply Posted by ronnie on Monday May 23 2016 at 20:57
About time but why are academies allowed to make their own changes the poor parents who have to organise cover whilst they are working will suffer most especially if more than one child in school time holiday companies changed their policy too so that prices don't rise in october just cos kids are off school

Reply Posted by Jean on Monday May 23 2016 at 21:25
Two weeks in October why?. Why not have a week in June instead.

Reply Posted by Neil on Monday May 23 2016 at 21:59
This is a stupid idea. Due to the shift pattern I work it makes it impossible for me and my Co workers all to have a weeks summer holiday as a family. Never mind though looks like alot of kids been taken out of school term for holidays with the family. Glad I never voted labour.

Reply Posted by Kathryn Foers on Monday May 23 2016 at 22:04
Well this seems to have had a lot of thought!!!! NOT!!!! When is the most common time that parents take children out of school?? Ether term time or tagged onto a holiday? I would like to bet that it's either tagged onto spring bank holiday or June/July and what date do they choose??? OCTOBER!!!! What an absolute JOKE. This has certainly not been thought through. Councils all over - not consulting with parents before making any decisions !!!

Why can't school be the same in all areas. My husband works in Dewsbury school and barnsley were out of sinc in Feb and April. So now add the october hols and that just about all my annual leave on childcare. And we will still be penalised for taking kids out of school. Not much thought gone into this decision! !

Reply Posted by Ann Dawson on Tuesday May 24 2016 at 07:35
Bloomin ridiculous. I was a school governor years ago in Rotherham and tried to suggest having the whole of June off but it fell on deaf ears. July is too late now for the children to be off. It is on the turn for Autumn in this country. I would say it had been a good idea to have made it the whole of June i.e. longest day of the year and lighter nights etc. but not July. Sorry wrong decision.

End of the day kids have way too much time off.they just end up hanging around in gangs causing a nuisance.people put that down to being nothing to do for kids.that utter rubbish.theres by far more to do now than there was 30 years ago when i was a kid.too many holidays an less education.why parents are whingin over bookin an holidays is ludicrous.cant you book a summer holiday in 5 weeks????.whats 1 week less you fools.dont make a blind bit of difference at all.which ever the decision made you would all still moan.think cutting holidays is a better idea.too much time off.makes it harder for us working parents to sort out kids when there having 7 months of the year off.in theory kids would rather be at home when its dark early rather than avin to get to and from school in the dark.logic really int it.

Everyone will save on childcare costs, plus the kids wont be as bored as 4 weeks fly by.

Well done Barnsley... I was a parent with children in school and often took October holidays re costs in summer. We had some amazing weather, even in uk and spent quality time with our children. I was a teacher for a time and hated the long autumn term... children started bright in September then illness struck for second and third weeks of term tailing off toward October break. The term was so long, the days were long as we got towards Christmas and the children didn't wasn't to work. We said back then why cant they change the holidays and space them out a bit better... for children, parents and staff. Not all parents can manage a full sixweeks with time off from work, some don't have a partner to share the load or have other support form grandparents etc. I think this will be beneficial to all when it gets settled... give it a try... As to holiday companies, it is these that want regulating ... There are still some good holiday venues that are warm in October, better for children if it not too hot anyway...

Reply Posted by Polly on Tuesday May 24 2016 at 10:53
I'm sorry Diane, but if you were a teacher, I just hope it wasn't English you taught. At the end of the day, you can never please all of the people, all of the time. School holidays will always cause a problem for working parents because the amount of time for employees holidays is so well short of the standard school holidays. Yes I agree that the October decision is wrong, as someone else has said some schools take an extra week at Spring Bank, that makes much more sense. It allows for cheaper holidays and there is usually better weather.

Reply Posted by Samantha bower on Tuesday May 24 2016 at 21:29
Great idea. But why not make the 6 week holiday into four weeks. Then let the parents decide when they want the other two weeks. Not all family's can take holidays in the 6 weeks. That is each individual have the choice for their own 2 weeks.

Reply Posted by Martin on Wednesday May 25 2016 at 07:01
This is an interesting attempt at innovation around the school calendar which has sound principles. I'm not sure that the addition of a week of teaching in July and removal of one in October is the best fix though.

Also, this will have an unintended consequence of pushing teachers out of Barnsley (and we don't need that). In one stroke every Barnsley teacher with their own kids who lives in a differs authority will want to leave to go and work somewhere where they can spend their holidays with their children.

Reply Posted by Jayne on Wednesday May 25 2016 at 07:20
Who wants 2 week in October?! Why not spring break like it used to be at least the weather is nicer and people can go on holiday.

Reply Posted by stephen on Friday May 27 2016 at 23:42
Reduced summer holidays as to be good for all kids as they'll be board after three weeks anyway

Reply Posted by Mike on Saturday May 28 2016 at 11:37
Nice for shorter break in summer, but October for another week, some parents can't get that time of as lots businesses are gearing up for xmas and new year so the block holidays. How about earlier in year before they start pushing towards exams so the kids are more refreshed for them.

Reply Posted by Janette Hoos on Monday May 30 2016 at 09:40
How will this benefit families who want a nice summer holiday together? It will just put more demands on businesses to allocate summer holidays over that four week period. This Government and local councils seem hell bent on dismantling family time and eroding the time children have to enjoy summer holidays outdoors! Just so sad!

Reply Posted by Jayne on Monday May 30 2016 at 09:44
I so agree they should shorten the summer hoilday but make the extra week off in may half term, as it take kids longer to get back into school rountine after long summer hoildays off

Reply Posted by Mark Smith on Monday May 30 2016 at 10:25
This is a very silly change. Examination years will receive less teaching. Children will be on holiday more when it's cold and dark and in classrooms in the hot sunshine. Seems a really backwards move by this mavric council. Obviously self interests are prevalent over common sense by these councillors.

Reply Posted by Bryan Fleak on Monday May 30 2016 at 11:40
The extra week in October argument because the winter term is too long. However if you take away some of the summer holiday then the winter term will be even longer and a 2 week half-term will only really benefit those who can afford to go abroad for it. Nice for the Holiday industry to have an even tighter summer break to rack up prices in.

Reply Posted by karen on Monday May 30 2016 at 15:31
Don't mind the shortened Summer hol but why not ad the extra time to Spring hol when weather more suited to kids being outdoors. School staff were not consulted about this and didn't know anything about it until it was reported in Barnsley Chronicle.

Reply Posted by mark guy on Monday May 30 2016 at 23:19
This or similar has been proposed in other parts of uk.
It still makes no sense.... Uk pupil holidays are far shorter than many other countries.

School are about EDUCATION. Not a baby sitting service. Summer School holidays are important for childs PHYSICAL and emotional DEVELOPMENT.
But lets face it, if councilors where interested in helping pupils. They would talk to TEACHERS, after all we often spend more time with pupils that their own parents.
Growing up needs body, mind and emotional stimulation. Time with loved ones, parents and grandparents. Time in the sunshine, time with out of school friends. Expiriences, that are low cost or free, but worth infinitely more because of it.

When my daughters were young and were at infants and junior schools at Deepcar (1980s) they did have two weeks at summer half term (May/June) and we used to go away the second week which was not only cheaper but nice weather and light evenings to enjoy it.

Reply Posted by Em on Thursday December 15 2016 at 22:13
Awesome!! Can now go away in October to escape the grotty weather, plus it will be cheaper cos not all of the UK are doing it. And it breaks down my year, too. I always need a break come Autumn. Plus child care cots will be more manageable.
There was a consultation on this, on the BMBC website, so you could have all have had your say, like I did.
