VANDALS have destroyed newly planted trees at a popular Pogmoor park.

Trees were attacked at Penny Pie Park, at the corner of Dodworth Road and Pogmoor Road.

The 25 trees were only planted last month by Barnsley Council using ‘section 106’ money given by the house builder Bellway.

Wendy Lowder, Barnsley Council’s acting executive director for communities, said: “It’s such a shame they think this behaviour is acceptable and that they can’t appreciate the efforts that everybody goes to, to provide the borough with nice parks for everyone to enjoy.

"The Friends of Penny Pie Park work hard to keep the park clean and tidy and plant new trees and flowers annually.

“The damage to the tree amounts to £120 which is a complete waste of money and we are unable to replace the tree now, because it’s not planting season until November."

What is going through their minds when they destroy everything in site. Last week was a park for the kiddies now this. Barnsley was once a nice place. nowadays its turned bad.

Sad. Some people just want to spoil things for others. It must make them feel powerful. It might not just be kids as on similar issues there have been comments from adults about 'it was a waste of money in the first place' etc
