Are you happy with your bus service?

Monday April 18 2016

Barnsley Interchange Barnsley Interchange

THE number of bus riders in Barnsley has fallen.

Overall satisfaction in bus services has also dropped, as well as satisfaction with public transport information.

The stats come as a newly formed Barnsley Bus Partnership will aim to tackle the issues.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has set up the BBP with Barnsley Council and transport operators to review bus services in the Barnsley area.

The partnerships aims are to improve service quality, punctuality and reliability and create a more efficient and stable bus network.

Are you happy with your bus service WABers? What can be done to improve it?

Not really. Only get the one bus to work X20 which happens to be the first of the day and you can guarantee it is not on time. Its also hourly which for such a busy bus (capita and webhelp workers catch it) is a bit pathetic really.
There are plenty of buses that go from Barnsley to Manvers yet a vast majority of the workers from manvers catch that particular one. The others are fairly empty around the same time.
Dont even get me started on how late that bus is at leaving doncaster to head to barnsley. On average it is 15 mins late every single day. Sometimes 25 mins late. Its diabolical. I understand traffic cannot be helped but surely altering the times slightly and maybe making it every 30 mins would help out.
Some services have a bus every 10 mins and often run with only a handful of passengers yet a bus as full as X20 gets is only 60 mins. Its stupid.

The X20 is funded. So the people who fund the service can only afford to run it every hour. The trouble with traffic is that its not consistent. Some day you might be late by 15 mins others it might be only 5mins

Nope to say I live in an area where the buses are suppose to run every 10 mins after 9am your usually stood waiting anything up to 30-40 mins for one to turn up and 2 or 3 come together at once. They are also very late first thing in a morning which isn't great for people getting to work and doing school runs to different villages

No I am not happy with the bus station coz all the youngsters are hanging around in they at night and weekends and all you hear is swearing and they run up and down the bus station and if you say owt to then you just get a load of mouth

I do not agree that prams should take as much room on buses.I personally think that prams should pay a child or adult fare.

Since rates went 'bust' there are now no buses between the town centre to queens drive. Going along Huddersfield road. I mean there was only one an hour (roughly) and none on the weekend, but now there is none. It is ok for me as I can walk, but there are plenty that I know that can't and feel isolated as taxis can get expensive

i catch the 226 from bolton on dearne to manvers(capita) i am at the bus stop from 7.15am, the bus should arrive at 7.26 but on occasions the bus has either gone or going it never waits its time or arrives when it should, leaving me late for work as i after wait for the next one 20 mins later. on speaking to regular people that use the 226 service around the same time as me they say that most drivers go early as they like to stop at wath interchange and chain smoke and wait their time....maybe get a non smoker to do that route JUST SAYING!!

Absolutely ridiculous how many children are hanging around the bus station everyday like its a cool thing to do, theres constantly drug addicts, foul mouth people. Around there. These children and adults are very abusive obviously under the influence and South Yorkshire Police do nothing basically about it. If there was a community police officers there daily to get these children and adults to move on it may have a different impact or just ban them from the bus station and if they return get them locked up im sure they will think twice about it next time,

The bus company's need to start at ground level. Employ drivers who will treat passengers with respect. You barely get a civil word, that's if they bother to answer at all. Nobody twisted their arms to do the job, lets face it, its not the best payed job in the world. The buses are often dirty, even first thing in a morning you can barely see out of the windows. When its cold the drivers are snug in the cabs while the passengers are very cold. And don't get me started on drivers going straight past a bus stop leaving people stood waiting, because they are running late. Don't the bus company's liase with the local councel to find out where road works are? That has to be one of the causes of buses arriving late. We have family in the Elsecar/ Hoyland area and the number of 66 buses going to that area is ridicules! Between Sheffild Rd and Holand centre the other day 6 number 66 buses past us!! Couldn't at least 2 be deployed elsewhere??

The only problem with posts like this is that it brings all sorts of moaners out of the woodwork.i can't understand how the drivers can be snug in their cabs while the passengers are cold. When an engine has been running for a while it heats up the water and that in turn goes round the bus and warm air comes out of the vents and that, like any vehicle, is how a heating system works. The amount of people who use buses and are rube and miserable is unbelievable. Most of the drivers respond well to passengers . Obviously the council tell bus companies about roadworks but they can't change a full timetable just to accommodate a few days of roadworks, and just so you know, you have to put your hand out in good time unless you expect them to be psychic, if you put your hand out too late they won't have enough braking space to stop. Years ago I used to work in Sheffield, I knew I had to be at work for 08.00. The journey would normally take 30 mins to drive but if I didn't set off an hour earlier I would be late. The rush hour slows everything down and no 2 days are the same. So common sense tells you to take into account any delays that might happen, simply use an earlier bus.

Having read most of the comments on here it's about time some people got a life. I catch the bus every day to work & back, the drivers are friendly & more than accommodating. If you ever take to time out to say morning or hello the driver will respond to you. But if all you do is tut that the bus is late more than likely not down to the driver, moan about it being cold, grumble about not getting a bus every 10 mins. I'm not surprised the driver can't be bothered with you. Can you imagine just how many sour faced customers catch the bus & sit grumbling through a drivers day? It sounds like the "Band Wagon Brigade" have decided to jump on this post. I say to those people "Smile" there's so much more to life than grumbling about a bloody late bus, try catching an earlier one.

Maybe that's because there's fewer jobs available for people to travel to? If you need to travel - you need to travel regardless of the quality of the service.

The worse thing you have done is stop the buses 274 from Bolton on Dearne to Doncaster even if you had cut it down to one an hour would be better than none at all X

I am not happy with the service of the 219a going towards Barnsley from Thurnscoe Hanover street. I have to get off the bus on Houghton Road and walk up Merrill road . Why can't this bus go round the Whinwood Estate Like the other 2 buses i.e. 226 and the 219.

Considering every morning i walk to wakey road to catch a bus because the 12 bus never comes. Then there are 4 possible busses i can get and its a 5 minute drive to town from wakey road kfc bus stop. Yet i still stand at the bus stop from 7:40am every morning and often miss my first train to work which is at 8:14 because a bus still hasnt turned up.

Reply Posted by Xxx on Friday April 22 2016 at 07:57
So you telling me that from 07:40 that 4 buses miss? I doubt that very much

To a point. As a student who uses a Mi Card, it's very very annoying that it's almost next to pointless having one as the rates for bus fare just go up & up. At this point we're only getting a 20p/10p discount compared to getting around a 30p discount we did last year. I understand we're supporting keeping the buses running, but as a student it's very difficult to get around as most of us don't usually get a lot of money.

I used to use buses regular when I was at school, but now I'd rather use a taxi because there's no roudy passengers and sometimes it works out the same price. I work in wombwell and live in Staincross so I would have to get 2 busses to work and the busses arnt reliable to come on the time theyre meant to arrive which would put me late for my next bus. If they were monitored so passengers wernt so rude I would probably use them more often.

No wonder passenger numbers are falling, who wants to visit a building site? There's no quality shops, poor pubs, and very little entertainment in town..!!

I often catch the 66 bus at the Cutting Edge, Ive noticed that while they seem to come out of Barnsley every 10 minutes, they seem to come back into Barnsley in groups of 2. I recall on one occasion there were 4 buses going into town all together, 2- 66 buses a 267 and the 265 Sheffield bus. Who plans these timetables????

Reply Posted by Dawn on Friday April 22 2016 at 19:39
Our bus service no 67 goes through Hoyland Common cough estate plats common.jump.hemmingfield. corton wood . 1 bus every hrs... nearly always late... sometimes doesn't turn up ... so we are left to wait another hour .. old people as well .. & then you get no 66 running every 10 mins or so sometimes 2 turning up together ... all double deckers & nearly empty. .. knock some roof them off & give us a 67 service every half hour ... disgusting!!!!!

I find it cheaper and easier to get the train and it only takes 10mins from silkstone. I honestly just find that the busses that come to my end even though are more direct now still take forever and its really not worth 3.10 when i can pay 2.40 on the train. The bus station is extenely scruffy and not maintained like it used to be they spent all the money there and it just looks like it needs a good paint job. Along with the youngsters and mouthy druggies that hang around there all the time. I just find the train a much better option.
Also no offence to the bus drivers because i know its a tough job but i find a large percentage of them unwelcoming and grumpy. I think a few improvements would go a very long way.

Why don't you all stop moaning and buy a car ?

I don't know how drivers put up with all the constant rattling on the buses. I could not put up with that for all those working hours. Surely, it must damage their ears. Probably this must put passengers off.

There are some wonderful bus drivers out there who are always smiling and always say good morning to you, which really brightens my day on my commute. However, then you get those drivers who drive off at speed whilst you're still trying to find your seat and who slam hard on the brakes so you break your neck trying to get off the bus.Think some of them just like tearing through barnsley at crazy speeds.I have constant problems with buses not waiting at a stop if they're early and just driving off, which I'm sure isn't allowed.Whats the point in having those times if they're not going to adhere to them?I also wonder how arriva can charge £1.65 to get to town but stagecoach charge £2 from Carlton to barnsley?Bit of a difference with not much of a service difference, not that I can see anyway.Think the reason why less people are using the bus is because they can't rely on them when it counts. When you have to get from goldthorpe to Cudworth in an hour, you haven't got a prayer because you can bet the x19 will be late every single time. The 32 is probs one of the only buses that I never had a problem with!

Reply Posted by Xxx on Sunday April 24 2016 at 10:13
The difference between the fares is called competition, the stagecoach fares in Wakefield are cheaper than arriva
