Barnsley ranked top for dog-fouling fines

Thursday April 14 2016

Barnsley Council Barnsley Council

BARNSLEY is a hotspot for dog fouling - with more fines issued in the town than anywhere else.

A spokesperson for the Kingdom Security private enforcement agency told councillors last week that when it comes to issuing fines for dog fouling, Barnsley ranks at number one across 30 councils the firm covers.

Last year, more than 450 dog-fouling fines were issued in Barnsley - an increase of more than 263 from the 187 fines in 2014.

Those figures saw Barnsley placed top in the UK out of 348 councils for dog-fouling enforcement.

The council pays out more than £1.2m a year to clean up litter and dog mess, which prompted area councils to partner with Kingdom Security to help tackle the problem.

There needs to be more bins! Responsible dog owners will carry to nearest bin no matter how far, but these are few and far between. Then there are those dog owners who have every intention of disposing in the right way only to bag up the mess, carry it so far and then discard it STILL IN THE BAG!

It's horrendous in goldthorpe every other step your having to side step it and the dog wardens are always at the side of fields trying to catch responsible owners and not on the streets looking for the real culprits

There's dog crap everywhere in Great Houghton, you have to look down all the time. The irresponsible, lazy dog owners don't care if children or anyone else walks in it. Absolutely disgusting. All it takes is for a child to walk in it without realising and then walking it into the classroom. Then a child could end up being blind from it. Wish I could catch those responsible because the council aren't gonna ever do owt about it.

This is not surprising.what they should do is name and shame these people in the Barnsley Chronicle every week. They should do a DNA of all dogs so when the owners allow the dogs out thinking no one can see the dog. The dog crap can be used as evidence.

Most dog owners I no are very responsible owners.

How about working on the same principle, and checking the DNA from the human crap deposited in some private gardens, after a weekend of pi**heads getting caught short on their way home ?

Bins are no excuse. If you want to own a dog - clear up after it - it's that simple.

The content of horse poo is vegetative which means it is made from mostly grass, dog feces is made up of meat, which is why the bacteria is more dangerous (i.e. when kids get it in their eyes), a single dog will produce more bacteria in one day than a person, a horse and a cow combined.
Plus horse poo is good for growing flowers so get a shovel and put it on your rose bushes. Judging by your uneducated initial comments you'll probably put it on your cannabis plants and take your "status" dog (a staffy most likely) for a Sugar. Honey. Ice. Tea. in a soft play area.

This firm Kingdom Security are using intimidation tactics to get fines from responsible owners that look easy targets instead of going after the real causes of the issues - hence the problem isn't going away. The streets and grass verges are a joke in places.

dave, use your noggin mate, officers can only fine if you dont pick up your dogs poo, how can they "intimidate" you to do that ?!.. responsible dog owners pick up after their dogs and don't get fined, miffed was right, it is very simple - don't leave your dogs poo lying around, if you do you deserve to be fined, its disgusting

they need to cum to harry road park and see how much dog poo around there. I feel sorry for the footballers who have to avoid it when trying to play footy.there's 3 bins at either entry but still they don't use them. it's disgusting, I feel I'm the only one picking up after my dog.it's not just poo , round the play area it's full of litter .I don't think youngsters today know what a bin is, it's about time they learnt.

All very worthy comments folks. There are only so many enforcement officers, unfortunately they have to spread themselves too thinly. It is worthy of note that dog fouling is against the law, whether it be on the street,or public park. If you are a responsible dog owner/walker you have absolutely nothing to fear. The officers do a great job in often very volatile situations.
Perhaps we need a dedicated enforcement team to patrol the areas of proposed new gypsey sites, where dog excrement is often outnumbered by human!!!!!
Happy days!!!!

It's simple. Engage more enforcement officers as they will surely be self-funding or better.
