WAB Debate: What needs to be done to make Barnsley a better place?

Monday April 4 2016

What will Barnsley be like in 2025? What will Barnsley be like in 2025?

AN EVENT will be held this week that will ask people for their hopes for a better Barnsley.

The event will mark the launch of the Our Barnsley 2025 campaign, that asks residents what they’d like Barnsley to be like by the year 2025.

The event will take place today (Tuesday 5 April) from 1pm - 4.30pm, and tomorrow (Wednesday 6 April) from 9.30am – 1pm at the Better Barnsley shop in the town centre.

Chris Webb, Chair of the One Barnsley partnership, said: “We’re really looking forward to hearing a wide range of ideas. We’d like people to be brave, innovative and think outside the box."

So WABers, what needs to be done to make Barnsley a better place? Comment with your ideas below.

A real open market like the ones before Barbary was wrecked.I daresay this will not happen as these days planners don't seem to like markets and they are downsized and given less prominence.Point in question.......Wakefield.Castleford ,Walsall,to name but a few.Markets draw people in to town and add character as well as being the life blood.

Markets are a thing of the past unfortunately.
Barnsley market USED to be fantastic and there was no reason to shop anywhere else.
Nowadays since BMBC constantly upped stallholder rental prices then most stalls are simply not financially viable, hence the reason the market is dead now.
In the 80's the market was the lifeblood of the town these days everyone shops at primark.

Bring back the old fashioned markets, not the characterless, dreary, uninteresting, nondescript glass block full of shops that you can access anywhere. Support the local businesses and give people bit of diversity. That will bring people back into the town centre. Also, bring in a more effective and better trained police force, the high crime rate keeps people away.

Firstly, Increase the police presence in the town especially round peel street lavs and get the shouty alchos moved on and give them "get out of town orders".
This is one of the main reasons I don't go in!
Same goes for the smackrats pestering for "busfare"!

BMBC want to spend £50 MILLION of our money but have yet to get any "top drawer" retailers into the town centre.
We don't want to see nothing but charity shops!

Roads - Absolutely ABYSMAL! These need to be prioritised!

Peoples attitudes need changing too, they moaned like hell when Walkabout put tables and chairs outside.
We need to be embracing the "café culture" that other towns and cities have adopted.
More restaurants are also needed.

The problem with the town centre I that everything closes at 5pm sharp, this discourages people from going in and many go to Meadowhall instead where everything is "under one roof".

A good start would be...rid our town of junkies, dossers and our thieving "imports".
Demolish the lairs of certain scum in the Sheffield / Doncaster Road area, then perhaps more decent people would be drawn back to our once nice town centre.
Because as it stands, our townsfolk no longer feel comfortable or safe whilst surrounded by lowlifes.

Some more shops to look round get rid off all the drunks and the drugers and get more police walking round the town I don't like walking round town anymore coz I don't feel safe they is too many drugers

Reply Posted by Kimberley Brown on Tuesday April 5 2016 at 20:52

Something like trinity. Modern shops. H&M and such like. And burger company. Nandos. Yorkshire tea rooms. Put in better shops and attract a better class of people. Near town hall looks cosmopolitan with cooper art gallery. University college. St Mary's church.

Make Barnsley town a place to be proud of.
From good old hard working miners family's to hard working modern family's.
Move with the times and get more classy.
This will get the good for nothing's out and only this.
I refuse to take my children to Barnsley and they don't know what it is to be proud to be Barnsley born and bred. I remember the days as a child my mum got me dressed up to go into Barnsley on the bus, to go shopping.
I wish we could go bk to when Barnsley town was like this.
It can be better.
You sort this out Barnsley , you will get kids wanting to come to the college and new sixth form. You then get career minded kids seeing better opportunities in our town. You then get better local areas because family's don't leave the area for these opportunities. You then get a town to be proud of

Free or cheaper parking at least
Part sheltered shopping area similar to trinity centres
A variety of different dining options in one area
Split shopping areas up into defined areas like meadowhall has shops aimed at high earners at one end, then pound land and bargain stores at the other end. Leeds has it's victoria quarter which is a different shopping experience too which works well.
Cleaner streets; gum pigeon and litter free
Decent public toilets
Better pram and disabled access to businesses.

Bejeysus, jlo85...Are you of this planet ?
Split shopping areas into Toffs at one end, and riff-raff at the other ?
And I thought CaMORON was living in the dark ages, with HIS constant abuse of the "class system" !
What next, a tabling system in restaurants ? One side for the rich and a separate area for the rest of us to feed on their leftovers ?

Fix all the potholes,
But judging by the new carpark that's just been completed on the old ceag site then the council has used it's tarmac supply for he next 5 yrs

Stop all the lowlifes hanging around the cashpoints and asking people for money for busfair

Zero tolerance of scumbags , lowlife , islamic zealots , flytippers , druggies , perverts , thieves , ner do wells , ******* dogs , boyracers oh , ive just realised Barnsley will be void of inhabitants !!!!!

grimreaper, totally agree with your first points. However considering that I believe myself a descent inhabitant of Barnsley I do believe we are fast becoming a minority in this once wonderful town. Yes Barnsley has been rough, albeit a nice rough. The decimation of the coal and other local industries by the slag Thatcher in the 80,s was the start. This was then continued by limp wristed labour governments bowing to the faceless to....s in the EU. Then of late the open border policy. Let's close the country, repatriate , get some proper industry back with proper descent paid jobs then tackle our own low life's that sponge off our state, local authority, and local NHS. I doubt this will ever happen, for fear of the people who could influence this being labelled racist xenophobes
Sad, sad, sad!!!!!!,!

Agree Naughtynorman, but you have Labour to thank for their uber politically correctness and open door policy letting in MILLIONS of people into the country and our town.
Look at the Labour clowns @ BMBC towers, they are ACTIVELY courting the Tories to send MORE asylum seekers.
WHY you may ask?
Because there is an earner in it for them!
As per usual everybody gets what nobody wants!
Going off at a slight tangent here but look at Page Hall in Sheffield, once a traditional white working class area and now awash with Slovakian gypos who DONT want to work, Slovakia doesn't want them so why should we have to pay for them?

Go into the town centre any day of the week and we are slowly but surely becoming foreigners in our own town, oh but you cant say the "F" (Foreigner) word in this politically correct namby pamby society without being labelled racist!
what an absolute load of crap!

Just what exactly do the migrants bring to the party?
Look around the Sheffield rd, Doncaster rd, cemetery rd areas, these areas were once inhabited by the local populous and are now housing a large majority of Poles, Romanians and every other Tom, Dick and Harry from all over Europe, these areas are now akin to Beirut!

Oh but they work! The politically correct clowns say to justify their argument about the migrant swarm that has invaded this once proud town.
Yes the large majority of them may work but this also has a major impact on our youth which have little chance of gaining fruitful employment as the agencies that supply "labour" to client workplaces systematically discriminate against our own by solely sending the migrants to client workplaces!

Lets be honest here too, the migrant swarm have lowered wages for us locals, they REFUSE to integrate with locals which causes lack of "social cohesion" all they are interested in is earning money, some SIX TIMES more than what they could ever wish to dream of earning back home in their respective countries.
They send VAST amounts of money "back home" which takes money out of our local economy.

The only way we can reclaim our town and country and send the migrant swarm back to where it came from is to VOTE OUT in the EU referendum on the 23rd of June!

No words can sum up the response of decent people in response to your hate filled bile. Your views are disgusting at best, inflammatory and dangerous at worst.
