Council plans substance misuse service

Thursday March 24 2016

Barnsley Council Barnsley Council

THE COUNCIL is teaming up with a clinical group to plan a new service that will help support recovering drug users.

Barnsley Council and Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are working together to plan the service that will support people over 18.

From April 2017, the council says it will commission a new model for prevention and recovery from drug and alcohol misuse, with a greater focus on reducing the harm caused to families and the local community.

Oh, how sweet...the council and CCG (WHO)? are "planning" to take positive steps to "help" the moronic drug takers in our town!
If BMBC had thought of this "cunning plan" twenty or so years ago, they may have had a fighting chance. Too little too late i'm afraid.

The CCG are the clinical commissioning group...they are the GP;'s across Barnsley who decide what services are going to be delivered to the people in the borough.
There has been a substance misuse service for years but recently closed the inpatient detox unit down at Kendray.

This article is very misleading, they are actually proposing a 42% 1.9million cut to the existing treatment services. A sort sighted attempt at saving money, doing this will just increase strain on other already struggling services such as a+e, due to the reduction in pharmacological and psychosocial interventions for substance use.

So Mr what's occurring, expect the likes of the town centre to get worse.

Barnsley has had a model for prevention and recovery from drugs and alcohol misuse for many years. It was based at Kendray Hospital, it was closed down! Why... To save the trust that ran it money.... Problem! The trust that ran it was South West Yorskshire Parnership Trust or for short the mental health trust based in Wakefield..... The services in Barnsley have been cut, disbanded and run into the ground by a trust not based in Barnsley thus not supporting the Barnsley people, it also closed Keresforth and its next target is Mount Vernon Hospital, the only elderly physical rehabilitation hospital in the area for miles. The actions taken by BMBC whilst an admirable effort in support of those suffering addiction, it's a sticking plaster over Grand Canyon.

I know there were plans to close and demolish Mount Vernon Hospital and build houses on the site. However, I have recently heard it said that this is now not the case and that Mount Vernon is to remain open with money to be spent on the building. Time will tell if that is the case.

This is just positive spin to hide the fact that there is going to be 42% disinvestment from the services that already exist. The reality is - it's bad now and it's going to get a whole lot worse. CCG clearly don't see services as a priority.

This story is an absolute joke! There has been a substance misuse service in Barnsley for years... Plan all you want... You've destroyed the support to users, families and loved ones in one foul swoop of your funding cuts!! Like everyone has commented... 42% cuts to an already stretched service! 30+ people out of a job and countless people/families going to be left without the much needed help/support! Unbelievable! Well done to all those idiots that voted Tory! They've just destroyed Barnsley for good.

"Substance misuse" !!! All the low the low life's would appear to have moved to peel square after closing Kendray. Let's be honest hardworking, tax paying people of Barnsley, lets scoop all these drug and drink abusing leaches on society up,dig a big hole, carefully put them in it a fill with concrete!!! Thus saving The NHS,and Barnsley tens of millions which can then be used for decent folk with conditions not brought on by themselves.

Are you forgetting something 'Disgruntled'? The people making the health service decisions in this part of the country are invariably Labour people not Tories. Perhaps if more people voted Tory local services would be more efficiently operated.

Alf Sidebottom do you really think that health service decisions in this part of the country are affected by local democracy and how we vote in council elections? You seem to have forgotten that your wonderful devolving government have put all control in the hands of unelected quangos under the sanction of a Doctor hating health minister!
