Final months for Taybarns

Taybarns set to close Taybarns set to close

A POPULAR all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant is set to be converted into a pub food venue.

Taybarns, at Tankersley, will become a Brewers Fayre restaurant after a ‘strategic review’ undertaken by Whitbread, which owns both businesses.

All other Taybarns sites across the country will also be converted.

It is understood that the change will take place this summer.

About time it's an awful place

I'm disappointed to read that news. Taybarns has a unique style which I find attractive, and is affordable for most people yet serving excellent food in a relaxed way. Now it will just become like all the other eating places, and out of the price range of many folk.

I agree with you. It was unique in its genre around here in the Barnsley,. Dearne Valley area. It is not just for greedy people as it is mentioned in some comments, it is also for fussy eaters, those who want a variety of food choice and it is good value families of 2 adults+2kids. My daughter and family loved going there and I have been also many times.

Reply Posted by trev on Thursday March 24 2016 at 06:12
we as a family have been visiting taybarns for a few years i as a very fussy eater find this place great as i can pick from lots there exactly as i want will they still serve me salad and gravy without batting an eyelid??????

Reply Posted by Lily on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:02
No won't get as many customers people go there because it's different why another brewsters taybarn is out of the way and people aren't going to travel there when they've got Brewers in the doorstep why fix something when it's not broken myself and family and friends won't be going all the way over there

Reply Posted by Dave Moncreif on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:05
Taybarns was a place for greedy scruffs anyway.
Would never catch me in a place like that.

Reply Posted by Adam on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:05
**** food full of scrubbers who let their kids throw food all over the floor . Glad the dump is going

Reply Posted by Diabe on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:15
Think this place should stay as it is.never seen any unruly parents or children but that should be sorted by the staff.

Reply Posted by wend on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:35
I stay in the premier inn next door alor throughout the year and lets just say its a nitemare getting parked because of taybarns as it was always packed. God knows what it will be like now!!!! Never been in it but know of quest at the hotel could never get a table for dinner !!!

Reply Posted by Julie lockwood on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 10:37
Very disappoimtin news. Been to this place quite a few time an enjoyed every visit. No complaint at all. Will be very difficult to find a match to eat elsewhere.

Our family love taybarns it is always full I cannot believe you are changing to Brewers fare

Reply Posted by Mr C on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 11:00
So funny reading some of these stuck up people on here thinking they are better than others... As for Taybarns, this is a huge mistake. My family loved it for being different from the rest + great value for money. We will not be going to the Brewers Fayre as there are similar establishments closer to home.

Reply Posted by Big T on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 11:12
Bit of a shame. Taybarns was cheap and cheerful and the food was "you get what you pay for" and I dont think anyone was ever under the illusion it was top quality grub.
Making it a generic cookie cutter Brewers Fayre though is disappointing. Those pubs are pretty run of the mill and have such generic tripe on the menus. At least with Taybarns you could have anything you wanted.
Brewers Fayre is just such a soulless family pub that is usually among the "too late to get a table anywhere better, lets just settle for there" style pubs. They'll regret it, cant see it getting much custom based on where it is.

good food cold and crap should have gone before now

Reply Posted by Adam Collins on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 11:52
Brewers Faye have all you can eat every night after 5pm with their chefs counter, burger might on wednesdays and fish and chip night on fridays is some of the best quality around, all you can eat flame grilled burgers and chicken!

Reply Posted by Laura on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 12:12
I'm disappointed in this. My son suffers with Tourettes and Autism with demand avoidance and this place was perfect for us. Staff always allowed us to be seated away from the busy side and allowed my son to eat what he wanted to eat and he is a picky eater. Shame it's going.

Reply Posted by Mary on Thursday March 24 2016 at 08:31
I totally agree with you ,my young son is also autistic and loves the taybarns because he can eat exactly what he likes is chicken nuggets and more chicken nuggets ,unlike other pub restaurants the children don't have to remain in their seats ,shame its going

Reply Posted by Jacko on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 12:12
I used to think taybarns was ok. That was until I went to Red Hot Word Buffet in Leeds which is basically a more upmarket version.

Went to to Red Hot in Liverpool too which was good too.

Reply Posted by Paula pierpoint on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 12:19
Its about time, Taybarns and place just like them serve terrible quality food, would much rather pay a little more for one quality meal

Reply Posted by Laura on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 12:49
It's a real shame! It's a great place when u got a family of picky eaters! Taybarns pleases everyone!!!

Reply Posted by Chris Oates on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 13:30
A crying shame, always found the food hot and tasty with plenty of variety. I live on the outskirts of Bradford and meet my mate from Rotherham there,we've two Brewers Fare outlets within a three mile radius here so there's no point in going to Birdwell any more.

Taybarns is a lovely place to eat if your a fat person like me,I like the unlimited supply of two girls one cup style ice cream and to bathe in the large vats of cheap school like gravy whilst licking smash from between my toes. If anyone actually enjoys eating here i suggest you google piston heads a bit council. you will soon realize what you are when you get out of your Zafira, and step in to a place where the food isn't good enough to feed to my dog.

Reply Posted by Thor on Thursday March 31 2016 at 00:47
Haha Big Dave, I've just nearly fell off my chair reading this. If you're ever looking for someone to help out with the smash licking then give me a shout.

Good, it's a horrible restaurant.Imagine staying at Premier Inn and only having Taybarns to get a meal after travelling. I've seen people come across to McDonalds from there.

used to go every week when it was brewers fayre it was a nice place then it changed to taybarns, went once and that was once too many, the place is gross as people say full of over weight people getting a cheap fix

Reply Posted by Michael on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 19:15
Good for kids.?..its all processed **** that make kids over weight and unhealthy and its full of scrubber's and no am far from a snob but that place was a disgrace

Reply Posted by Janet on Monday July 18 2016 at 21:43
I've been today and had the most beautiful salad....lettuce, cucumber, sweet corn, red kidney beans, grated carrot, coleslaw and baked salmon. There was absolutely nothing that was processed and I have had less fresh food from restaurants that charge twice the price.
It's true that there are a lot of greedy people who stuff themselves silly at a buffet but I take issue with being called a 'scrubber' just because I've enjoyed my meals there (many times, I might add).
You are most definitely a snob, and a rude one at that, though, having read many other replies on here, it seems you're not alone!

What's the difference between Tabarns and Brewers Fayre? To me they're both equally as **** - crap generic food in a scruffy surrounding!

Reply Posted by Jo on Wednesday March 23 2016 at 22:53
Thank god for that it's like a cheap cruise ship for fat smelly people and the food is like tasteless slop

Reply Posted by skim on Thursday March 24 2016 at 00:03
NOT HAPPY me and my daughter are picky eaters and this is only place worth eating with GOOD food and for price for what we eat.
So they are going to fetch another pub, restaurant as whats same on everyone's door step.
There food are crap END OF and know most will think same

For the record I like Taybarns. Very underrated place. You basically can quickly sort yourself out with food.

Reply Posted by GKN43 on Thursday March 24 2016 at 14:49
That's a real shame. We've had many melds here and enjoyed every one of them. I'm a picky eater and love the variety which you just don't get in normal pub menus. We have several other Brewers Fayre pubs and flaming Grills and Fayre and Square pubs all within a much closer range to us so we will most definitely NOT be visiting ever again once it changes. Very disappointing.

Reply Posted by Alex fox on Thursday March 24 2016 at 16:06
I am disgusted. I do visit Brewers fayre but LOVE Taybarns.
It is affordable for most families and the food is tbf better than Brewers Fayre.
They need to have a lkng hard think. It should be going the otherway. Brewers Fayres turning into Taybarns.
They will loose in the end.
It's Barnsley. We're tight with out cash!!!

Didn't mind taybarns I've eaten much much better but worse too, Brewers Fayre are carvery style restaurants, Moorlands at Owler Bar being one. It's very reasonable on price too. it would be nice however to have something slightly more upmarket given the hotel behind.

Reply Posted by Louise on Thursday March 24 2016 at 21:46
After reading these comments about its a place for scruffy fat people blah blah blah it's disgusting to think people judge others by where they eat. I've taken my children a few times there my 2 eldest are stick thin and can eat for England and they love it there for the variety of food. My youngest is add and autistic and like I said the variety is brilliant because he is fussy with food and struggles socially. I think it's a shame and for families on a budget working or not it's ideal. Think people need to stop being keyboard warriors and get a life........

Interestingly most of the comments supporting Taybarns are full of text speak and show low levels of literacy.

It's cheap low quality food from factory farms with shocking animal welfare. Yet the people defending it claim to be "picky eaters".

Shovelling one kind of crap into your mouth doesn't make you picky it just means that your palate has become so used to over processed mush that you have no idea what real food tastes and feels like.

Reply Posted by becky on Saturday March 26 2016 at 17:09
Full of greedy scruffs or scrubbers is a bit low.....painting everyone with the same brush is wrong!! Taybarns was just a lovely place to go with Myself and my family as we liked going here it's a shame it's going to no longer exist

Reply Posted by Well I Never on Sunday March 27 2016 at 17:33
Cheep processed food being eaten by greedy people who over fill their plates & waste more than they eat. Welcome to the Taybarns experience. I was unfortunate enough to be working for a company who used them last year for a Christmas "treat". The food was disgusting, I'm no snob & can appreciate people wanting value for money in hard times, but changing Tayburns to Brewers Fayre is definitely a change for the better.

Reply Posted by Emily on Monday March 28 2016 at 17:49

Very sorry to hear that Taybarns Tankersley is to be converted to a pub/Brewers fare.
This was and has always been a fantastic eatery. My family and I used Taybarns on a very regular basis. I consider this change to be a big mistake. Taybarns was extremely popular and will be missed by thousands of people who went there.

Reply Posted by Gary Walker on Saturday May 28 2016 at 07:01
Liked the food but didn't like kids running about and throwing food on the floor whilst the parents were too busy stuffing their faces!

Reply Posted by Jenny on Saturday May 28 2016 at 21:12
Sorry it's reverting to Brewers. Maybe it's a way to control the greedies getting their absolute "fix". Glad to have experienced it in our region.
Incidentally in reply to some people's comments ....
It's parents who let children throw food around by the way - not Taybarns who unfortunately have to suffer your insults.

Shame - we go to Taybarn at least once a week - very affordable & good food etc. And we live like 30 miles away. We've got a Brewers Fayre just down the road - only been twice - food was rubbish.
Taybarns Barnsley used to be a bar & restaurant - and they changed it to Taybarn because they never got enough clients in (its too far from anywhere really). Why didn't Whitbread just raise the prices a bit if Taybarns weren't
making enough money.....

Reply Posted by Louise on Thursday July 14 2016 at 14:13
Gutted...I too go with my family and friends and we love it. We are neither fat nor slobs and I find other people's comments downright disrespectful. Unfortunately I won't be patronising the new Brewers Fayre as we too have pubs nearer and are all much the same. Do like the Red Hot World buffet to but sadly are all too far away from me.

I was just looking to see what was on with a view to calling Tuesday night and I am shocked to say the least. Taybarns was superb. But as usual brewery company greed has had the final word. The brewery fayre inns are crap which is why I won't be seen dead in any of them and now they'res another one to add to the list.

We live in chesterfield and we always came here at the end of the holiday season usualy once a month, i am not fat, its just my son likes burgers and pizza i like a carvery and my wife likes chinese all at a great price so it suited us just fine we can get the same overpriced meals ala brewares fayre at marstons, wetherspoons, to name just a few, so it looks like wetherspoons tomorrow

Very disappointed, I only heard about taybarns at the start of the year so I travelled from uttoxeter to see what it was like. It's so good for money and I love the idea of an all you can eat buffet and I've been to a few buffets and I would say taybarns was the best. The food is still warm and fresh unlike alot of other buffet branches. Now it's an normal pub I won't be visiting again to go all that way when we have a Marstons branch pub on our doorstep. I Think this was a very poor decision.
