TEACHERS are urging parents and carers to take an 'active interest' in their child's education - so they don't flunk important exams.

Teachers are keen for kids to maximise their exam achievements and future their life chances.

Parents and carers are urged to support their children by taking an active interest in their schooling and establishing good routines which will assist regular school attendance.

Advice by the joint chairs of the Barnsley Schools Alliance comes as new figures revealed the relationship between good school attendance and achieving strong exam results.

The figures from Barnsley Council show in 2015 only 5% of pupils who attended a Barnsley secondary school for less than 80% of the available number of days achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade, including English and maths.
