Shock announcement for local post office

Wednesday February 10 2016

Post office Post office

WOMBWELL'S busy town centre post office has been earmarked for closure.

The Post Office has started consultation on plans to shut the main office in Wombwell and move it into budget frozen food shop, Heron Foods.

The proposed move would see one screened and two open plan counters.

If the move goes ahead, the branch would be open 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sunday.

People can register their views on the proposed move by visiting www.postofficeviews.co.uk and entering the reference code 162340, or call 03457 223344.

Don't be silly, what would we gain...apart from disruption? That post officer has been there for as long as I remember, it's an important piece of wombwell town.

Post Office's that move into existing businesses are often better than what they replace with extended opening hours being a major benefit. I'm more interested in what the implications are for the delivery office (if any).

Considering Royal Mail and Post Office are now two separate companies I can't imagine there'd be much impact on the Delivery Office.

Would just cause more hassle as post office always rammed without having people getting there shopping too in there wouldn't work

This happened in Mapplewell and the service is rubbish. Staff have no idea about post office. You're often waiting in a queue behind people who are waiting to pay for their shopping. Apart from longer opening hours, it's definitely a negative.

It's closing because the lease is up and isn't being renewed by the whoever owns the building. The post office will still be in Wombwell doing exactly what it does and for longer hours. The parcel delivery side downstairs is actually a separate company

You are quiet right Mike they are too separate bussiness. But you can problem bet the land the post office is built on is owned by the Parcel Service behind.

Thanks for the correct information Mike hallett. This move is to prevent the post office from closing in wombwell all together. The current staff which is myself Sam and Carly will all be going with the move and we're pleased to be keeping our jobs and keeping the post office on the high street and open in wombwell for our customers. All the same services will be offered we will just be down the street.

Thank you Mike Hallett, you have got that correct.
The staff are going with the move, and there is no reason why any of the service should be effected, as a member of staff that has been there 10 years, and is in support of the move. We would welcome everyone's support in trying to make this move a positive one.
All services that people receive at this post office now will all be available at the new premises.

Good news that the Post Office is remaining in Wombwell. Not the same for Barclays and Barnsley Building Society who are closing down. Pity we will now only have 2 banks on the high street. I feel sorry for any elderly customers of both of these branches who will now have to travel into Barnsley to do their banking.

Let's hope the staff are a bit more helpful and more pleasant in the new premises extremely rude the other day when I went in

Needs some new staff... I use post office in brampton because the staff at wombwell are just rude! Last time I went in with my 2 young children the staff were swearing and very unprofessional.

my first thoughts were oh no,because the post office is so important to wombwell, but my main concerns are for the staff, they are brilliant and so friendly, known them for years, really hope to see them in new premises

Sorry to hear you aren't happy that the current staff are going with the move but sadly we can't please everyone. We have many customers that come from lots of other villages and are happy with the service we give. Our customers are happy that we will be moving to the new premises and again I'm sorry you aren't happy about that.

So does that mean that's another outside cash machine we will lose in Wombwell along with Barclays. By the way I go to Brampton PO staff are far more helpful and they don't stand outside smoking in front of the premises.Having said that they will blend in with Heron staff they two smoke outside the bussiness totally unacceptable in 2016.

I can't see why you should mend something that's not broken. Why have we the people who live here not been consulted. And what if herons close down in the future.?? what then?
