High hopes for Luke's Olympics bid

A BARNSLEY man who holds the record for Britain's best pole vault may not get a shot at the Olympics because he's having to work to support his family.

Luke Cutts, 27, of Thurnscoe hopes to compete in  Rio de Janiero but he is also working at a packing factory - which doesn't pay him when he takes time off to train.

His coach says Luke - who is the British record holder and a Commonwealth Games silver medalist - needs to raise £10,000 to help him compete.

Trevor, 68, of Park Grove, Barnsley, said: “He’s a young family man now and has children to look after so needs to earn a living. His employers are supportive and do give him time off, but it’s unpaid. We are trying to raise some funds to support him during the times he’s off work.”

Luke narrowly missed out on funding from the World Class Performance programme, which is a Lottery funded initiative.

It's a shame his employer doesn't value his talent, I will be happy to offer him some of the sponsorship he needs, hopefully a few more local businesses will follow suit and help make his dream a reality.

Someone needs to set up a crowdfunding page to help Luke out and make sure it is well promoted locally and on social media.I for one would be happy to donate and am sure his target would be reached in time.

His coach, Trev, set up a Go Fund page. Fingers crossed he gets the sponsorship needed and it would be amazing if some local businesses sponsored him.
