OVER ten tonnes of rubbish and green waste have been cleared from land in the town centre.

Council officers got to work on land between Westway, Wellington Street and Pall Mall in a bid to clear it up and make it less of a hiding place for those planning anti-social behaviour.

A spokesman said: “A lot of work has gone into improving this area for the benefit of everyone who comes to Barnsley town centre; the removal of low level vegetation will discourage anti-social behaviour and enhance the appearance of the town centre.”

Can you move from the centre of Barnsley now please, there are plenty of places that need cleaning up, try the old laundry site @ Cundy Cross, banks of the Dearne near Grange Lane, in fact around Lundwood is getting to be a joke.

Great now how about regular clearing of litter from the other areas within close proximity to the town centre that are continuously littered due to heavy foot fall. Planters have been untouched for years and some streets around the town end roundabout look like slums

Stop planting new shrub and flower beds witch need looking after, also have rats running about unseen grass areas are lot easier to clear of litter ext/ this will free some of the men to other places as someone else said .The laundry site as not been touched since the day it was planted.

Race common road is a dump. From shaw lane downwards. And yes it is foreigners. I've seen them dumping carrier bags if rubbish just in the street. They don't use their bins because that's how they live in their country. They think it's ok here. It's disgustingly filthy. We live on a street pay council Tax and use our bins.

Foreigners? I live in Cudworth. There are no foreigners on my street but it's still full of rubbish. There are good and bad in all nationalities so please let's stop blaming people from other countries for everything that's wrong with our own.

Well said Annette, too many people want to "blame it on the foreigners" ! Take a good look at our own first, stop using the easy excuse and accept we have a huge amount of " undesirables" born and bread in our own town !

I went through cundy cross today and I was horrified at the amount of litter on the streets. Litter is a bad problem in barnsley but what I saw today was unreal. We all can do something about it it's not necessary to live in filth. OK it might not be your litter but pick it up its outside your house! Your street. It's your town where your kids are going to grow up. We want it to be nice for future generations down we. Where is people's pride. Love where you live!!

There's generation after generation being brought up by scrubbers, you see it all the time. Parents with small children throwing litter/tab ends on the ground, as well as bad language and manners. These kids know nothing else, no pride about where they live. Someone else will pick it up? Disgraceful!
