Christmas dinner for homeless announced

Friday November 20 2015

Christmas Lights close up Christmas Lights close up

A PROPER Christmas dinner will be served to scores of homeless people in Barnsley - but help is needed to add a festive touch.

Barnsley Churches Drop-in Project, on John Street, will be serving a roast dinner on Christmas Day for  about 40 people.

While volunteers have already flocked to help serve up the lunch, things like small gifts and Christmas crackers would be appreciated.

Chairman Kate Raynor said: “Such simple things can have a huge impact on a person who has very little. Christmas is a time for family, for spending time with those we love. When this is not possible, Christmas can be a really difficult time of year."

Way to go Kate. If Woody's Fish and Chips can help in anyway, you know we shall. One thing we do have plenty of is POTATOES for the Roasties!

Would gift boxes of a hat, gloves and toiletries be ok? Or is there something more specific you have in mind?

I'm puzzled all these kind people waiting to offer there generosity and many like my self waiting for a response and not a response from the organisers on WAB.

The story does say that BCDP should be contacted directly on the email or phone number provided in the piece. It is staffed entirely by volunteers who may not have seen these messages (hence why we included their contact details in the story)

Hi All, apologies I hadn't seen the story outside of social media and therefore missed all these comments! And as Nicky says, we're all volunteers and I'm not actually due in again until Friday.
Thank you so much for all your offers of help.
Toiletries, especially shower gels, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant (roll-on preferably) would be great. Warm items such as gloves, socks, hats. And then other bits and pieces like flasks or torches for those who are on the streets. Food items can also be distributed so if you want to donate a box of chocolates or something like that, we can either give these to individuals or have a tin of roses etc out for people to share.
If you want to get in touch with us directly you can use the email above or we're called 'BCDP Drop-in' on facebook.
Thanks again for your offers of help. We hope to see some of you soon :)

Are you still short of anything? I belong to a couple of community groups who can offer small gifts. Do you want them wrapped or unwrapped? If unwrapped, should we send gift wrapping too?
