Driver Arrested After Tankersley Five Car Pile-Up

Thursday May 31 2012

THE driver of an articulated HGV has been arrested following a five vehicle accident in Tankersley that left people with serious injuries.

The collision happened around 4.40pm on Wednesday 30 May at the midway point between Thorncliffe Road and Tankersley Roundabout.

Police say traffic had been queuing along the A616 when an Articulated HGV was in a collision with the rear of a Renault Scenic, which led to subsequent collisions with a Vauxhall Corsa, a Nissan Van and another HGV.

The male driver of the Nissan Van, an 18-year-old from Manchester, sustained serious non-life threatening injuries, with a dislocated fracture to the arm and a serious lower leg injury. He is currently being treated at Barnsley District General Hospital.

The female driver of the Vauxhall Corsa, a 31-year-old from Sheffield, was trapped inside her vehicle for an hour, before being recovered. She is being treated at Northern General Hospital for serious injuries.

A passenger in the Renault Scenic sustained whiplash injuries and was taken to Northern General Hospital.

Other drivers received minor injuries, which did not require hospital treatment.

The driver of the first articulated HGV, a 60-year-old man from Cudworth, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Anyone who witnessed the collision should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 807 of Wednesday 30 May.

i really do think the retirement age for jobs like driving such vehicles should be lowered

katie my other half is a hgv driver and at 45 hes just had his first medical to see if he is fit enough to drive one he agrees the age should be lowered but at the same time he has friends younger than him who drive like nut jobs cutting corners and driving over pathways it should be a case of taking a test every year and if you fail you have your license removed that goes for eu drivers as well.Thoughts go out to the lady in hospital x
