MP Dugher slams Government over Northern Powerhouse

MP Michael Dugher has slammed the Government for creating a Northern Poor House - not a Northern Powerhouse.

New figures reveal that more than one in five neighbourhoods in the Barnsley Local Authority area are among the most deprived in England.

The 2015 Index of Multiple Deprivation figures show that of the 143 neighbourhoods across the local authority area, 32 are ranked in the top 10 per cent of most deprived neighbourhoods.

Mr Dugher said: "With more than one in five neighbourhoods in Barnsley among the most deprived in England, we are a world away from the Government’s so-called ‘Northern Powerhouse’.

“We need to support people in Barnsley and increase social mobility, but this Government is hitting families with a tax credit cut that will see over 5,000 working families with children in my constituency losing out."

I think we can also thank a 10 year labour government and a labour council for these as well that have failed to attract business to the area for over 30 years since the mines closed. We can't keep blaming government.

I agree we cannot keep blaming the government, I blame the relentlessness of the local residents to move on from teh mindset that "we are Miners" and the tolerance of everyone in the town for bad behaviour, including casual attitudes towards drugs, dog fouling and bad language. You cannot walk through barnsley town centre without hearing the "F" word - no wonder innovative businesses don't want to move to the area and create jobs with prospects. Any new business stakeholders thinking of setting up in Barnsley initially encounter the presence of the aformentioned, and then have to tolerate the great barnsley Business Representatives who are all in it to exploit and topslice at every opportunity (Council / Chambers etc.) - they do right to stay away.

The ruling Labour Council have done NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING to bring jobs into this town.
There are vast swathes of former brownfield site that are RIPE for development but BMBC are ONLY interested in building houses on green belt land.

Shows the "mettle" of our duly elected leaders when they heralded the bringing of Asos to our town as our saviour!

Talk about irony.....
