Police hunt for man following frightening train assault

Thursday September 3 2015

POLICE are hunting for a man pictured on CCTV following a frightening assault on a vulnerable train passenger.

A group of men targeted a 49-year-old man, who is partially sighted, on the Northern Rail service from Sheffield to Leeds on Saturday, July 4.

Investigating officer PC Fiona Poyner said: “The victim was sat at the back of the train on a folding seat when a group of five to six men, who had been drinking, boarded the service at Barnsley station at around 2pm.

"The victim was called names by the group before being hit on the back of the head by one of them.

“This incident, which would have been frightening for anyone, was made even more so given that the victim is partially sighted. It has affected his confidence and has proved extremely traumatic for him, resulting in him being afraid to travel on public transport.

“No one should be made to feel like this. Everyone has the right to travel in safety and without fear. It is vital we find those responsible for this cowardly attack.

“We believe the man in the image could have important information about what happened and we urge him or anyone who recognises him to come forward to help us with our enquiries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40, or text 61016, quoting reference PSUB/B9 of 28/07/2015.

Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I hope this cowardly person is caught and brought to justice, hopefully it'll send a message and go someway to making the person who was attacked feel safe enough to travel again.

Non of us white cane users feel safe with the growing trend to look on us as scroungers. Even when like me most work and pay taxes. A 20 something man knocked me flying in the alambra subway, and when a passerby said "when you see a white cane it means they cant see well" his answer was "well he should learn to use it better" I will not use public transport as there is no help to stop this type of crime.
