Officers arrests 100 for drug driving in South Yorkshire

Monday June 29 2015

ONE hundred arrests for drug driving have been made in South Yorkshire just 117 days after the new legislation came into force.

Since the additional legislation was brought in on March 2 officers have carried out 179 tests of which 100 returned a positive result.

The change in the law means drug driving carries the same penalties as drink driving.

Of the drug screening tests that have been completed on drivers at the roadside, 69 of them highlighted that cannabis was present in the driver’s system.

In 21 of the tests cocaine was present and in ten tests there was evidence of both cocaine and cannabis.

Chief Inspector Glen Suttenwood, who heads up the force’s roads policing team, said: "We will not tolerate such disregard for other peoples’ safety and will continue to do everything we can to tackle the issue of drug driving.”

Well done to the cops for tackling this problem. It is obvious out on the roads that people are not in their right minds. The use of mobile phones whilst driving should carry a jail sentence. Every day on my 15 minute drive to work I am surrounded by people driving whilst on their phone, or bimbos doing their hair in the mirror, erratic movements to the radio. Scary. How dare they put other peoples lives at risk. I hope the police get the funding to take these Pollocks of the road. They could try Dodworth road. Deadly. Good luck police. I support your efforts
