Free early morning hospital travel for Barnsley pensioners

Monday June 22 2015

ELDERLY people with early morning hospital appointments will be able to travel on Stagecoach Yorkshire buses for free in Barnsley.

From June 15 elderly pass holders can catch a Stagecoach Yorkshire bus for free to hospital appointments requiring travel before 9.30am.

All they need to do is show the driver their official hospital appointment letter and their concessionary pass on buses that serve Barnsley Interchange.

The leading bus operator is currently trialling the scheme, introduced following discussions with the Barnsley Retirees Action Group.

A follow-up meeting between Stagecoach Yorkshire and Barnsley Retirees Action Group has been arranged for later in the summer.

While I think it is a step in the right direction I find it uncomfortable people showing strangers their appointment letters. There is confidential information on them which is no one else'e business. There are also appointments at Mount Vernon that do not have a stagecoach bus that serves it so they will still have to pay to reach there. What about if their travel is out of the Barnsley Borough? Still a way to go for out elder population
