BARNSLEY'S market traders have voted to close the markets on the Royal Jubilee day in June, We Are Barnsley has learned.

The extra bank holiday - on June 5 - was put to a vote to traders who had to decide whether or not they will open for trade and those in the town centre, Goldthorpe, Hoyland and Wombwell all decided not to open.

Anne Untisz, town centre services manager, said: "The ballot was undertaken with the full support of the National Market Traders Federation to enable businesses to make the decision based on their individual choice.

"The result was an outstanding 'no' to opening, with the vast majority of traders wishing to close for the day."

The borough's markets will operate normally on June 2 and 3, and from Wednesday 6 June.
