Litter Enforcement Officers Proving To Be A Success

Wednesday February 25 2015

OVER 1,200 fixed penalties have been handed out to people littering in Barnsley town centre.

In May 2014 the council started a contract with 3GS, whose three officers have targeted litter louts six days a week during office hours.

So far, 1,248 tickets have been handed out.

In one case, a man was fined a total of £563 for three separate littering offences having given false details and failing to pay his initial fine.

There are 97 further prosecutions pending, with court hearings due before the summer.

A spokesperson said: "Feedback received is that there's been a noticeable drop in the amount of litter in the town since the contract commenced.

"It's great news for the town centre and its visiting customers."
