Barnsley Couple Celebrate Diamond Anniversary

Monday February 16 2015

A BARNSLEY couple whose love endured separation and the turmoil of war have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary!

Ronald and Norma Race, of Woodland Drive, Kingstone, both 78, met when they were 16 at the local dance hall on Pitt Street.

Several years after that first dance Ronald and Norma decided to tie the knot on February 17, by which time Ronald, a mechanic, had signed up to serve in the RAF.

The couple didn't have time for a honeymoon however, as within seven days of the wedding Ronald had to leave for Basra, Iraq, where he was posted.

Ronald's posting lasted for two years, but his return was unexpectedly delayed when he and a group of British soldiers were held for three months by Iraqi troops before finally being released.

The wait to return home was especially excruciating for Ronald. Just before his posting Norma had received the news that she was pregnant with their first son, Michael.

Michael would be 18 months old before Ronald held him for the first time.

They have another son, John, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
