Council Houses Left In 'Horrendous' State

Wednesday January 28 2015

SOME council houses are left in such a 'horrendous' state when tenants move on that the properties have to be treated for fleas, according to Berneslai Homes.

Other houses in Hoyland look like they have been used as 'dog kennels' and furniture cannot be recycled because of the risk of concealed needles.

Berneslai Homes' steering group heard at a meeting that more council homes had recently become vacant after older tenants died.

It costs on average £1,000 to clean up when a council house is left empty.

A spokesman from Berneslai Homes said: "Some people walk out leaving everything they own and the property fully furnished. They probably think it's cheaper than tipping or moving their possessions."
