B&Q Plans Unchanged Despite Supermarket Pull Out

Wednesday November 26 2014

THE town's B&Q store will still close as planned.

The retailer has told We Are Barnsley that their plan to close the Stairfoot store, on Bleachcroft Way, will still go ahead, leaving the 72,000sq ft building without a tenant.

Supermarket giants Sainsbury's had planned to take over its running, but plans were shelved after falling sales scuppered its move.

It has reported a half-year loss of £290 million and said like-for-like sales had fallen 2.1 per cent during the period.

As many as 40 supermarket developments across the country will now not go ahead, and only eight new stores will be developed over the next three years.

A spokesperson from B&Q said: "Nothing has changed so the plan for B&Q to close the store remains.

"The planning process still needs to complete its course before we are able to confirm when we will close the store."

I hope the plans for Sainsburys falls through. 3 supermarkets on one already chaotic roundabout will be a nightmare! Feel sorry for people who have to travel that way already! Shame to see b&q closing and feel for those who have lost a job!

2.1% drop in sales so they close it? Idiots!!

Its Sainsburys that have a 2.1% drop in sales not B&Q. B&Q were closing it before Sainsburys came along wanting the store. B&Q probably don't see a need for 2 superstores within a few miles of each other. Cortonwood being only a few minutes drive away.

Who cares about traffic that roundabout it garbage anyway so I couldn't se it making too much difference and its sad to see people loosing jobs I just hope when B&Q goes those people gets new jobs and by the sounds of what B&q worker says they was going to give jobs to B&Q workers

again staff being lied to about closure! and people on here gloating about sainsburys not taking over, think about all of us losing our jobs and stop being so damned selfish! its been a shambles since we were first told 18 months ago !

I was always against them replacing B&Q with a Sainsbury's here; it's in the wrong place considering it's in between two cheaper supermarkets, which are both at most a 5 minute walk awa. However, I do truly feel for the people that could be losing jobs because of this and I hope they turn it into something worthwhile, and hopefully it won't be just another abandoned warehouse...

As a bnq employee YOU all apparantly know more than we do!yes people get made redundant every day and it's not my 1st time but for alot it is, and when these article's pop up it make's us feel wonderful!(sarcasm)just bare i mind that we know NOTHING! Oh and as for women driver's on that roundabout they know more than the fella's!

Shame people are going to lose their jobs. I was looking forward to a sainsbury in the area I liked their clothing section and when I say a sainsburys I mean a big one not their piddly little ones like Jackson at monk bretton/ carlton

Such a shame about closure of B&Q purely for the sake of those who work there. I truly hope a resolve for these guys comes soon as it is a horrible situation to be in! Banans - you need to stop talking out of your a***, male drivers are statistically worse than women, I encounter enough idiotic drivers of both sexes every day...grow up peoples livelihoods are at stake here!

Might it be an ideal place for Sainsbury's to open a NETTO store?

Reply Posted by Red Optimist on Thursday November 27 2014 at 12:08
Too big in its current form. The current trend is to smaller retail units.

Reply Posted by n on Thursday November 27 2014 at 14:26
Could be! Sainsburys now co own netto so theres every chance!! And they were planning on knocking garden centre and tradepoint down! Although that still leaves a huge floor area to fill!!

Reply Posted by 4ft11andshrinking on Thursday November 27 2014 at 18:50
It is a really large area, but it could become smaller units for trading, lets think positive for a change!
