Parkway Vows To Stay Open

Parkway Parkway

BARNSLEY town centre's cinema has vowed to stay open - despite news that a nine-screen multiplex is to be built in the Alhambra.

We Are Barnsley broke the news last week that the council had given the green light to the multi-million pound investment, which will see a major extension built on the shopping centre's roof to house the screens and six restaurants.

Landlord F&C Reit expect work to start in April next year, saying it will bring a "much-needed leisure hub to Barnsley town centre".

Parkway, on Eldon Street, was saved by Darton businessman Rob Younger in 2007, who reopened it with his business partner after it was sold by Odeon two years before.

A spokesperson from Parkway said: "Whilst we are somewhat nervous about this development, we have no plans to close.

"We will continue to offer the best choice of the current films that we can, whilst providing good value for money and great customer service with a personal touch.

"This is just the planning approval - let's see if it actually happens. We were approached earlier in the year with regards to this development, but decided not to get involved."

What do you think? Does the town centre need another cinema? Have your say below.

I'll be sticking by Parkway as much as I possibly can - I love it there even though it isn't 100% perfect. There are many reasons but one of the biggest is the price difference between Parkway and a multiplex is too large to ignore - the atmosphere is better too.

Good price, great staff, decent leg room for the tall and recent films shown as they are released. I' will keep taking my family there. We sometimes go see films in VUE or Cineworld etc, but find that they are full of un-supervised kids making noise all the way through. Parkway have staff in screenings to sort that out. MUCH appreciated!!

Parkway is fantastic and also offer exclusive childrens birthday parties which I bet the new ones wont. Excellent value and my son and his whole year at school enjoyed his party.Very afforable to say the whole screen was just open to them. They loved it. Thanks Parkway :)

I really think Parkway should try and fimd a new niche here. It is an excellent opportunity to have a huge rebrand. Its so close to the civic and experience barnsley. Things which will increase tourism. The challenge parkway faces is not to compete with a six screen modern cinema. Its to create another element to the town centre which will appeal to another demographic. They could still tap into the childrens market but also go down an indie cinema route. Offer a more personal cinematic experience. I feel people assume one place needs to suit everyone. I for one will go to see a blockbuster at the new cinema in 3D and have the big screen experience. But I would also love to see something different in Barnsley. I'd actually pay just as much to see an old film and have a break in the middle so I can use the toilet and have the ice cream and snack woman walk around throughout the film. Really hope parkway dont try and do a half arsed job of trying to compete with a new cinema.

Get real optimistic, no one, and I mean no one, will ever come to Barnsley as tourists.

Optimistic - Penistone Paramount is a good example of this sort of thing. They also do concerts etc. Think you're probably right - that's the way forward for Parkway.

"I have only been once in the last about 12 years to those pictures most of the time I go to centertainment" this makes no sense and adds no value

While I`m all for the regeneration of Barnsley I very much hope the Parkway cinema stays open. It`s a part of the town`s history and deserves to be part of the town`s future.

I have been coming to this cinema regularly since 1970. My 2 children have been here many many times and now my grandchildren have been 14 times. The staff are first class and the ambience of the period cinema is, in my view irreplaceable. I have only ever been to a multiplex cinema once and have no intentions of going to another one as the atmosphere was totally lacking and the pricing of everything was outrageous. My grandchildren love Eldon Street Cinema & I have 4 of them.
