Barnsley Man All Set To Hand Out Supplies To Town's Homeless

Monday November 24 2014

We Are Barnsley We Are Barnsley

A BARNSLEY man is set to hand out much-needed supplies to the town's homeless for a second time this Christmas.

Adie Flute, from Barugh Green, read about The Rucksack Project last year and decided to help out in his home town.

Last year's success - which saw over 100 full rucksacks donated - has seen Adie come back to help out the town's more unfortunate residents once again.

He said: "We're up and running and really hoping to match, if not beat last year's efforts.

"Given we're lucky to have relatively low numbers of homeless in the town, the packs will also help those who have fallen on hard times, for instance 'sofa surfers' who are literally moving from one friend's sofa to the next.

"We're asking that everyone gets their packs ready for December 18 and hands them in at the Barnsley Churches Drop-In Project on John Street.

"We're putting on two sessions at 5 and 6pm so you can give your pack to someone who is truly in need of your help.

"If you can't attend on this date, you're welcome to bring your pack down to one of our drop-off points beforehand so that it can be given out on your behalf."

Founded in 2009 by Mathew White in Bristol, the scheme has flourished giving the less fortunate help through the harsh winter months.

It's hoped that more people will donate items to fill rucksacks filled with things such as sleeping bags, coats, hats, gloves, socks and underwear.

Flasks with soup, tins with ring pulls, non-perishable foods and cereal bars are also being asked for.

Drop-off points are at the Digital Media Centre on County Way, and at Barnsley FC's Community Sports & Education Trust building on Grove Street and the Crown and Anchor pub on Barugh Lane, Barugh Green.
