Wentworth Woodhouse To Be Put On The Market

Tuesday November 11 2014

A SOUTH Yorkshire landmark which is the UK's largest stately home is set to be put up for sale.

The 365-room Wentworth Woodhouse, which sits in 90 acres of land six miles north of Sheffield between Barnsley and Rotherham, was bought by Clifford Newbold in 1999.

A huge property, its frontage is twice as wide as Buckingham Palace, its roof covers two-and-a-half acres and it has five miles of corridors inside.

A statement from the Newbold family said: "We fell in love with Wentworth Woodhouse 15 years ago, buying it to save it from neglect.

"Extensive restoration works have been carried out in that time, starting with reinstating plumbing, heating and electrical systems throughout which hadn't been touched since the 20th century.

"After such a labour of love it is with great regret that we have made the difficult decision to move on. Our father, whose home it is, is nearly 90 and doesn't have the energy he once had.

"It is his and our greatest wish to find someone to carry on our work and see the house truly secure for the long term. Next spring the house will be offered for sale.

"The most important thing is to see the house in safe hands together with the preservation of the finest Georgian interiors in the country for future generations to enjoy."

The house - which reportedly needs a £40 million restoration - is expected to go on the market for around £7m.

Mr Newbold did a great job in restoring some parts of this magnificent home. Let's hope that the future owners do the same and let the public enjoy visiting it still.

I had the privilege to decorate some of the rooms here in the early seventies it was a beautiful place to work I hope that who ever buys it restores it to the standard it was then..

The price for an private purchaser too high in view of the amount that needs to be spend for continuing restoration, N.T. would be the best option for the sake of this magnificent building.
