Gender Pay Gap Growing In Barnsley

NEW figures show women in Barnsley are being paid 72p for every pound a man earns.

The revelation comes as Equal Pay Day - the day that women across the UK effectively start working for free due to the gender pay gap - comes three days earlier this year because the pay gap is back on the rise.

That means women will work for free for the next 57 days.

Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, has backed plans to ask big companies with over 250 staff in Barnsley to publish their average hourly pay gap each year.

He said: "These shocking figures show the full extent of the gap in pay between men and women in Barnsley.

"All across the country women are working an extra three days for free this year because the pay gap is back on the rise, with figures showing that things are even worse in Barnsley.

"We will require companies to publish the hourly wage pay gap of their employees so that together we can take the steps to deliver equal pay for women and men across the country."

I agree objective look how easy they can fire a few kids out then the get house paid for free money and a easy life the is plenty of women in Barnsley doing this but if you are a man you get nothing

...and who do you think puts the kids in there to "fire out" to start with? and I think you will find, IF a man was to be a single stay at home Dad he would be entitled to the exact same benefits as the mother would be.

Mr C, Grow some brains that work. The issue is pay equality. I'm a man doing the same job as my female colleagues and getting paid more, how the hell does this make sense. What other benefits women are entitled to is totally irrelevant. Same job same pay. Lets not get confused with same job people having added responsibilities as their same job colleagues which will pay more.
Also Mr C, if you are working on a production line being paid 20 pounds for every 100 produced, you don't pay Mrs C 17 pounds for every 100 produced. Get real.

What are the bosses and the owners say that women are not equal to there male colleagues, that your wife's, daughters are not equal to the man they work next too. It just shows you the value the employers put on your wife your daughter, the pay between the rich and poor, the north and south is widening, and now between gender. This does not come about accidentally, it is instilled into the Conservative party.

The article does not say that men are paid more than women for doing the same job. It simply says that men (on average) are paid more than women. Surely you can understand that situation because of the type of work that men do compared to the work which women generally do. I would imagine that this differential will reduce in years to come as more women progress their careers. This is a non-story.

@ Charles, the truth is that you don't want to see it, may I ask if you are an employer with this wage scale that disadvantage your women employees from your men. The national wage is low enough, with out this discrimination, freedoms for the working people where hard won and the ten percent that own ninety percent of the wealth would, set man against women in the work place to keep the wage low.

How can we grow has a nation or individuals if we treat one another unequal how can we work together knowing that your workmates are in a lower wage bracket than yourself because of there gender, it's got to be eradicated from our workplace, equal pay for the same task should be at the top of every MPs list for there constituents and if not you should ask why not? Things can't go on with this kind of inequality, there is something sick in society if we can't hold our female counterpart as equals for doing the same work.

As its illegal to discriminate on sex if there is hard evidence this is true (i.e same job but less pay) why are the employers not being prosecuted? Or is this a stat that reflects that women on average earn less, which is probably due to family life choices over childcare costs more than anything.As far as im aware i earn the same as male counterparts in same role with same yrs experience but less than those who've a couple yrs extra - where do you draw the line to make it fair?

Charles, Although the article doesn't say men are being paid more for doing the same job, effectively they are. If we compare women's pay to men's pay, then we must compare jobs to ascertain a equal or comparison in pay because women pilots get paid heaps more than men working in a mine or a plumber eg so get it right.
