Hundreds Of Council Jobs At Risk

Monday October 20 2014

HUNDREDS of Barnsley Council workers' jobs are at risk.

The local authority - which faces having to slash £10.5 million from its annual budget - will see massive redundancies and services cut across the board.

Some children's centres will be closed, the mobile library service will be axed and £2.5m will be cut from children's services.

Those are just some of the money-saving proposals which members of the public are now being asked to comment on and talk about.

The council says it will consult on the budget cuts until January.

The authority has already cut £60m from its budget over the past four years - by 2017 it will have had to save another £28m.

Council chief executive, Diana Terris said: "We are remodelling our whole organisation, by looking at every aspect of what we do, how we do it and how we can do better for less money."

Will Diana Terris be working for less then?

I thought not, 140 odd grand a year and a director in multiple other businesses I'm sure she'll come through the recession wealthier than she went into it.

The inequality in the Council is a joke. Services and jobs cut first where salaries should be.

I feel for those yet again let down, those that are most vulnerable seem to get hit the hardest.

Trouble is they only sack the people who actually do the things we need doing, the Town Halls are still full of bureaucrats who's only job is to try and justify the huge salaries they pay themselves.. !!! Diana Terris gets £30,000 just for organising local elections, not a bad part time job.????

Totally agree, if they were on performance related pay they wouldn't get paid in bottle tops.

You say she organises the local elections, don't you mean she orders others to organise the local elections then.

A) Takes credit if they are ran well
B) Blames thos below her if they are not.

The lower paid that actually do the work get canned and the top end stay. Thing is if someone from the top tier was made redundant would the average person even notice?

Two of the five Executive Directors are going so that's a start.

What about the number of councillors in each ward. Surely they can be reduced from three to two.

Reply Posted by M on Tuesday October 21 2014 at 13:16
I think if they got rid of all the clowns in the council then that would be 3/4 of the problem solved

Cut the Cllr's from 3 to 1, slash the wages of these parasitic high flyers and stop using consultants for a start. The common workers suffer everytime while the ivory tower blames everyone 'bar itself. Cllr's in Barnsley are becoming hated and that is a fact. HOW CAN YOU BE CALLED LABOUR WHEN IT IS THE LABOUR YOU ARE DESTROYING?

It is not local councils doing this! It is central government who are slashing local government budgets!!!

About time they did away with some of these 'made up' council jobs. Wonder if the cut backs will mean the 20 foot all singing all dancing real xmas tree they have every year in their plush offices will be downgraded....nope!!!

Reply Posted by LV on Thursday October 23 2014 at 22:58
Plush?! Have you heard yourself?? You'd think you were talking about the Ritz!! Those offices have pretty much the same layout as call centres, or have you only looked through the front windows and ignored the side view?

Reply Posted by Liz on Tuesday October 21 2014 at 13:42
And why not, it's only us plebs paying for it after all....

It's time to get rid of the "Club Attitude" and the "Clicks" within the council chambers the width and breadth of the UK, not just in Barnsley. We need councillors that care and have pride in the work that they do, after all, they are elected by the people for the people. In times of Austerity you do not go spending 100's of thousands of pounds on new footpaths when the ones we already have are perfectly ok. At least the ones we have, haven't turned green, unlike the ones around the town hall. As always there are to many chiefs and not enough Indians, and why are the council still employing outside help to man certain departments when they should be giving work to locals! It's time for a change. People have had enough of lies and spin.

Dear David same in the NHS,to many shirts and ties, and not enough docs and nurses.

Reply Posted by David Wood on Tuesday October 21 2014 at 14:25
For the past 30 years, I've always said that our doctors, nurses and police men and women deserve every penny they earn and this goes for miners also! It's a job not many people would not like to do and it take dedicated people to do such work. So I agree with you and reiterate to many chiefs and not enough Indians.

Hmm how many libraries/mobile have now been closed and stopped? This from a council who promised faithfully that would never happen! What do these councillors do except get their kite photographed in the Chron whenever they want praise for doing their job??? You only ever see them walking the streets around election time, oh yes they are always very interested in any concerns we may have then. Then a month down the line they can't even be assed responding to emails..a fundamental part of their job! They not only ignore the people who voted them in (not me) they actively work against them, ignoring peoples concerns, dismissing honest open debate, and steam roll ahead regardless. Democracy???

didnt think there was much to cut back on no doubt Penistone is going to get hit hard as we are always the first to have any cuts

We can all say that about where we live, but it doesn't make it true.

Jobs for the boys init! Why do council workers get paid (generously) for manning polling stations ? why cant 'ordinary members of the public do that job? As someone who has sat in on several cabinet meetings, why do they need to have a free flowing supply of refreshments ? And as for democracy , whats that? Theyre all in it together. If Steve Houghton farted the others would go for a sh**

Contact the electoral services department I'm sure residents can apply to be clerks, I know someone who was a clerk in a Rotherham polling station and they didn't and don't work for Rotherham council. It doesn't hurt to enquire and if they say you can't you haven't lost anything, it's worth a try for a bit of extra cash! But sat in a room from 7am - 10pm no breaks etc, doesn't scream fun to me!

Joe Public can man the elections polling stations. They just need to apply like any other job

Reply Posted by Ken Smith on Tuesday October 21 2014 at 19:19
With all the cuts in frontline workers and services is their a similar cut in manager numbers? You don't need the same amount of managers to run a diminished workforce do you? You are right Jo! Why not man the stations with members of the general public? Another possibility is to incorporate it into the working day of a council employee thereby saving some money for an already stretched council. We can't have democracy in Barnsley because there is no opposition to the labour group therefore no independent scrutiny of their workings and policies.

I think everyone will be aware of the recent events in Rotherham. This was brought about in some measure by the fact that the labour group had total control of council business and could not be held to account by any other political party. Happily for Rotherham this is no longer the case. Who knows where this will happen next.

Keep it simple vote UKIP

Reply Posted by lol on Thursday October 23 2014 at 23:07
UKIP are just Tories posing as 'average people' they're playing on what iritates the public to get votes. They don't give a damn!

Reply Posted by David Wood on Sunday October 26 2014 at 16:33
I think you will find in the majority of cases 99% of UKIP members are fed up of the same old same and have joined a party of other like minded people to fight to get our country back from the EU and our town halls and houses of parliament from people that don't seem to have our interests at heart. "Kippers" simply what's best for our country and the towns and villages that we live in. May I suggest you search UKIP policies document on Google you may find it very interesting.

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Sunday November 2 2014 at 15:31
The only bit I agree with is the bit about checking out UKIP policy before deciding to cast your vote for them.
The only credible UKIP policy is the one on IMMIGRATION, the rest of UKIP policy is even more right wing than the TORIES!

Yes change is most definitely needed but if you think that UKIP will magically create millions of new jobs and bring prosperity to the working classes then you and the other deluded fools that intent to vote UKIP are sadly and clearly mistaken.

Again, only a deluded fool would ever consider casting their vote for UKIP.

I totally agree. Labour have had it far too good for too long in Barnsley, they know full well they have a safe seat choose what they do. or don't do in their case! They have exploited their positions to the max. I hope the good people of this town are starting to realise this.

Does anyone know if the council still employ the full time union officials? Employed on union business paid for by the council tax payers of Barnsley. Now that is one place they could save money.

Reply Posted by STEVEO on Sunday November 2 2014 at 15:32
That is the law of the land is it not?
Same for ANY unionised workplace.

Reply Posted by Oh no on Thursday October 23 2014 at 23:39
What they going to do with all the spare Solitaire licences? I thought that's what councils workers do?
£60,000,000 saved in 4 years and who's noticed any difference, it's disgusting.

Perfect! Cut back on children's services, the future of the country!

As Barnsley is a Labour safe seat then the labour council do what they want regardless of what the Barnsley people want safe in the knowledge that they will get voted in again. I bet if you dressed a pig up in a red labour rosette it would get voted in. We need to vote out these clowns in the council and put in independent councillors. Dan Jarvis not even from barnsley would go to the opening of an envelope if it got his picture in the paper the idle git. Get rid of Labour.
