History Day Gears Up For Extravanganza

Wednesday April 4 2012

MEDIEVAL knights will be staging mock battles in Mandela Gardens as part of the Barnsley History Day celebrations.

The event - on Saturday - has been organised by Experience Barnsley (the people behind the new museum) and will be running from 10am to 3pm.

Organiser John Tanner said: "Over 1,200 people attended last year's event and this one is going to be even bigger and more action-packed."

Circus acts, singers, musicians will be performing and there will be some Land Army Girls and Napoleonic Red-Coated Soldiers around town. There will be face-painting and historical dressing up and Barnsley poet Ian McMillan will be helping locals to write a poem about his home town.

Barnsley Egyptologist and recent winner at the National Television Awards, Dr Joann Fletcher, will be doing a special workshop on the day too.

The event is free.
