Athersley South Footpaths To Be Closed

Wednesday October 1 2014

TWO footpaths which became hotspots for anti-social behaviour will be closed.

The two paths run between Bakewell Road and Matlock Road, Athersley South.

They run parallel, east to west, with one to the north of the church and one to the south.

The second has been a major source of anti-social behaviour, according to a report to councillors, including damage to bungalows and the church.

A social housing scheme on the site will now go ahead.

I suspect that the real reason for the closure of the two footpaths is to permit the redevelopment to proceed rather than anything to do with anti-social behaviour. Based on the report only the southern path seems to have an 'ASB' problem - the apparent council response is to close of access to the locus of the problem rather than grappling with the anti-social behaviour itself.
