Stray Dog Charge To Double

Wednesday September 24 2014

RELEASE fees paid by dog owners to retrieve their lost pets are to double in Barnsley, the council has revealed.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "The new method will help deliver a more sustainable approach to this problem.

"For example, dogs picked up by the dog warden will generally be taken straight to kennels, unless returning them to the owner is very straightforward."

The current £25 fee for releasing stray dogs from kennels will rise to £50, while the surrender of a dog will be set at £100.

What do you think?

It's to make sure they can maintain the current level of service which costs a lot more than they make in charges. It's fair enough, council tax payers shouldn't have to subsidise this.

Come April next year all dogs have to be Micro chipped so will there be any need for stray/lost dogs to be taken to the kennels?

So are you suggesting that dog owners are not council tax payers Mick? I own two and trust me I pay council tax and business rates and to be honest I get little for the former and absolutely nothing for the latter!!

Well done Barnsley Council, a step in the right direction. I would strongly suggest that these charges are still on the low side and they should be increased further.

Do agree the current charges r low but to double them?! I think its rather steep. I think more needs to be done on the fowling to be fair the sreets nr me in town centre are literally covered in it.

Im not sure I agree with this. On one hand a loved cared for dog would never go astray because you will have taken all prevention not to allow this to happen. On the other hand there is the exception where a dog might ' escape'. On that note first time 'offenders' should just be charged the £25 but consistant 'offenders' (bad owners) should be charged more.

It amazes me how anything official can be just doubled in price . If anyone suggested doubling wages for the working class , they'd think we'd all gone mad .
