Council To Clamp Down On Notorious Road's Illegal Parkers

Monday September 22 2014

ILLEGAL parkers on Racecommon Road and its surrounding areas will be targeted after residents complained to the council.

The Let's Make Racecommon Road Safe group - which has over 1,600 members - have been campaigning to make the town centre road safer.

From 2008, 23 collisions have occurred on the road, with the council saying that 83 per cent of those were perhaps a result of casualties' vision being hampered by on-street parking.

A review of the road's existing waiting restrictions and the need for more being implemented will also be carried out in a bid to protect junctions and improve visibility.

A council report said: "Ongoing concerns for road safety has been expressed by ward councillors and members of the public.

"Barnsley Council will now explore ways of involving the local community in the delivery of pedestrian training into the three local primary schools.

"Our parking services team will consider the area as a hot spot for indiscriminate parking and target it over the next few months."

They should have a review of parking on park road and especially at the junction with day street as its terrible for vision as sometimes you have to be in the middle if the road to see whats coming due to vans etc blocking the view

Agreed. The double parking on Park Road is also very dangerous. the park wall side needs to be double yellow lines.

Great attitude! Road users must follow the rules, you sound like the kind of person that thinks he is above the law. If everyone had your attitude it would be chaos on the roads you idiotic prawn. Anyway, keep parking illegally and you will get bumped as someone will misjudge the width and your car will be bumped. Its not rocket science... Silly owe lad.

expect them make it locals only and then charge them to park on their own street, they've done it elsewhere it's a great revenue stream

Actually you DONT pay road tax no one does. We pay car tax nothing to do with having rights on the road. It's for the amount of fumes a vehicle puts out. And that money doesn't go towards the upkeep of roads ect, that comes from general tax.

I would willingly pay for residents parking only....BUT.....whats the point? Traffic warden's are virtually non existent so how would the scheme be "policed"???
A pelican crossing down near the shaw pub and a few speed bumps wouldnt be a bad idea as well as strategically placed double yellow lines.

The ANPR parking services car will probably drive up once a day. As its mainly council workers parking on Racecommon Road to get out of parking fees it will just move the problem to someone else's doorstep.

I actually do pay road tax, I actually have done for years. I also pay general tax and council tax. that's why I will park where I want. and everyone else will park where they want. cars park outside my home. that's life..

It's all fun and games until a kid gets knocked over due to poor visability because of the "i'll park where I want brigade". Stop being a tight wad, pay a pound and park in a designated car park.

us bus drivers have to take extra care when going up or down the road as people just park on bends [near shaw inn public house] and double park and some drivers think a bus is the same width and length as a car then passengers start to complain to the bus driver as if it's their fault it's running late

stop moaning, if you don't like people parking outside your home.. MOVE and buy a house with a drive..

Reply Posted by Kath on Friday September 26 2014 at 11:30
@Guido fawkes Not really the point is it? I live in town and have people parking outside my house all day every day. It's inconsiderate and rude. Why don't they go and pay in a car park like we all have to! And that's like me saying 'buy a house in town then you can have the convenience of walking in'...

Reply Posted by ben on Friday September 26 2014 at 11:52
sadly kath, it is not inconsiderate to park outside any bodies house, it is the road and that what cars drive on. WHY should people have to park and pay in the town when you can park free on the outskirts. I work in town and only on a bare wage so paying to park 6 days a week all day would make it not worth my while working..

Reply Posted by Kath on Friday September 26 2014 at 12:14
I Take your point about not being able to afford to pay for parking all week. However, It is inconsiderate to park outside someones house. There are plenty of places to park unobtrusively without the need to inconvenience others. I would never dream of doing that, it might be perfectly legal but it doesn't make it right.

Council workers are the biggest problem they want to park their fancy cars somewhere safe, yet they don't want to pay!!!! The council won't let us have permit parking cos they damn well know it's all their staff parking on our streets! I'm typing this after just lugging 4 bags of shopping from 3 streets away because I cannot park outside my house!!!!

Reply Posted by Guido fawkes on Friday September 26 2014 at 11:58
sorry wendy, what gets my back up his residents think there own the road, but it doesn't give you the right to park outside your own home, look at your deeds and you will see, you bought the house and knew all the facts, get over it.

Reply Posted by Clappedout Banger on Friday September 26 2014 at 12:51
I'm sure its not just council worker that park here and what has the "fancy" bit to do with it? My mate works for the council and his car rubbish! End of the day he's proper tight and he refuses to pay for parking as rather spend it on a bag of starmix.

Reply Posted by Wendy on Friday September 26 2014 at 13:03
Speaking for myself yes it is only council workers, and by the same token what has his 'rubbish' car got to do with it? Not really relevant that he's too tight to pay for parking either, wouldn't we all like to park somewhere free all day! The difference being some people have consideration for others.

Id like to know what people think about dxxk heads who park on the pavements near schools and down school drives on the path my daughter nearly got run over whilst walking on the path by some dxxk head who thought they could park anywhere school did feck all the company who owns the school did feck all and the police just wanted to finish their sarnies. Parking on the kerb isnt big or clever youd be the first to stamp and paddy if you got clipped by a car.

Its simple really. You chose to live near a town centre which (in any town/city) would suffer from commuter parking, and rightly so, because not everyone can afford to or wants to pay. There's no excuse though for people parking where its dangerous and those deserve parking tickets or having lines put down to stop them. If drivers parked considerately and residents didn't decide they have to park right outside their front door, these situations woukd never happen!.
