Police Commissioner Wants To See Out Term

Tuesday September 2 2014

Shaun Wright Shaun Wright

SHAUN Wright doesn't intend to resign - but he won't stand for re-election in 2016.

The nation's media spent last week camped in Barnsley waiting for an announcement of the future of South Yorkshire's police and crime commissioner.

Mr Wright, whose office is in the former county council building on Regent Street, has faced pressure in the wake of the Rotherham child sex scandal which emerged last week.

The report said at least 1,400 children were sexually exploited from 1997 to 2013.

Local MPs Dan Jarvis, Michael Dugher and Angela Smith all added their names to widespread calls for the commissioner to resign.

Mr Dugher said: "The victims should be at the forefront, the most important thing is to keep at the forefront of our minds the victims.

"He should have done the right thing straight away instead of clinging on to office."

Mr Wright said: "I remain committed and intend to remain in my role as an independent police and crime commissioner for South Yorkshire.

"I plan to see out my term but will not be standing (for re-election) in two years’ time."

He and the rest of South Yorkshire police/ Rotherham council should be on trial for perverting the cause of justice

He shouldn't have to resign, he should be handcuffed and dragged from his office and tried on charges of child neglect!!! Surely!! How does he sleep at night??

Ok so if he wont resign he needs to be SACKED!!!! no nice pay off cushy pension....just straight to jail do not pick up £200. How this man can sleep at night is beyond me he either didn't know and therefore need sacking for not doing his job correctly or he did know (the most likely option) and he turned a blind eye and therefore is as depraved as the people (I use the term lightly) who abused these young girls. Do the right thing and stand down NOW!!!!!

As one of the supposed Overseers of Children's Services, conveniently overlooking the abuse, he has absolutely NO CREDIBILITY in his present role and should RESIGN forthwith.

Course he won't resign he gets his salary till the next election. He's just in it for the money not for the responsibility. Just like the rest of the politicians in south Yorkshire.

He is hoping that by 2016 this will be forgotten & he can get another job. As things stand he is as employable as Sharon Shoesmith who was sacked over the Baby P case.

He was elected as a Labour PCC. The labour MPs & councillors campaigned for him & spent a lot of money. It's unthinkable that he can continue now they have withdrawn all support for him.

I'm pleased to see the pressure won't go away as he has been called to appear before MPs in parliament next week.

That's £170,000 plus expenses before he retires on a fat pension. Nice work if you can get it.????

Why have all the posts been deleated from the post about the incident on Sheffield rd and why is the comments section closed on it? Didnt like the reading WAB?

Reply Posted by Red on Tuesday September 2 2014 at 17:11
Probably (and rightfully) closed comments due to the fact that it brought out Barnsley's brain dead? Good call, WAB. The comments were full of racist idiots who think it's only Europeans who cause trouble.

It's a bit of a shame WAB just deletes and locks any thread where people don't agree with them instead of trying to put their side across

It's a shame WAB have to delete so many comments & close articles to comments. But they have to do it because unlike many people who post comments they understand the laws about libel & inciting racial hatred.

There is no way he'll resign, as others have posted he's not going to give up a fat salary and pension willingly. He should be arrested and held to account.

There is absolutely no way on this earth he will resign, would you if you were earning £85k P.A?

The most important part to this story is that children were abused by Pakistani men albeit UK Residents but those charged with protecting child welfare "turned a blind eye" as they didn't want to be seen as being Racist.
Political correctness that came BEFORE child welfare, this country and its bloody mindedness politically correct namby pamby idiots should hang their heads in shame.
Not only must Wright resign, but ALL of Rotherham Council and the people that were in charge of the welfare of our children should go too.

The Labour party have been hellbent on being seen as Politically Correct and will let anyone into the country to work and play, Labour also signed up the the European Human Rights rubbish and now we are seeing cases of foreign rapists, murderers and paedophiles' that cant be deported back to their country of origin merely because Labour signed up to Human Rights laws

I sincerely hope you remember this the next time when you cast your vote.

You're so right @steveo. When there is a problem in your life that you can't solve yourself you go to the authorities. When the authorities don't uphold the law of the land, where then can you go? Am I right in remembering that Doncaster council was under threat of being taken over by the government? They should take control here.
