TRIBUTES have flooded in for a Barnsley soldier who was killed in a car accident last week.

Rifleman Dale Harris, who served with the 2nd Battalion The Rifles and was based in County Antrim, was one of two 24-year-olds who died after the car they were travelling in collided with a tractor on Friday night.

Lance Corporal David Gwilt, of Bedford, also passed away after the crash.

Many have paid their respects on We Are Barnsley since the sad news was published on Monday.

Stephen Cooper said: "An absolutely brilliant kid taken way too soon. Rest in peace, soldier. You won't be forgotten."

Louise Berry added: "Great lad, great soldier, great father. You'll be missed. Sleep tight."

Debbie Smith said: "RIP, Dale, a top lad and a top dad. Thoughts are with your family."

In a statement, their regiment said their 'tragic deaths' had come as a terrible shock.

"David and Dale were much liked, professional and hugely competent soldiers who had fantastic futures ahead of them," the statement said.

"The whole battalion is deeply saddened by their loss and our heartfelt condolences go to their families and friends at this most difficult time."
