Council To Unveil Major Town Centre Plans

Tuesday July 29 2014

BARNSLEY Council will unveil its plans for the town centre's redevelopment on Friday.

An artist's impression of the new-look centre, plans for the development area and timescales will all be available here.

Improvements have already started, with several streets already undergoing cosmetic changes such new street lighting, furniture, resurfaced roads and paving.

Most notably, a major demolition on Shambles Street has begun, with Barnsley Central Library and its neighbouring buildings being flattened to make may for Barnsley College's new £17 million sixth form.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "People visiting will see that some preparation work has already started. In the Cheapside shopping precinct, planters and bollards have been taken out so we can install the outdoor market.

"We'll really put the market and retail shopping back in the heart of our town."

Once the proposals are launched, there will be a six-week consultation period where residents are encouraged to give feedback to help shape the plans.

What do you think? Are you happy to see major changes being made to the town? Have your say below.

The town as a whole needs redevelopment / improvement and not just the Town City. That being said, just where is the money coming from to enable this redevelopment, hopefully not PFI?

It's a bit late for public consultation when the plans are already drawn up.

Barnsley MBC cabinet have a poor history of listening to tax payers they always know best, or so they think which is why Barnsley's in the state it is.

Erm, how do you expect to undertake consultation without plans?

Anything has to be better than what the Town Centre currently has to offer. Hurry up and get this started!

I hope the council are not planning to put the Tuesday market and the Sunday carboot sale on the precint. They both look like glorified jumble sales, which along with the other riff raff hanging round the town centre, will certainly put visitors off. They might come once for a look but probably won't return.

This is only a temporary move Archie so that the current open market, car park and council offices can be demolished safely.

It may only be temporary but the market is going onto the precinct for 3 years while the work is done. That's still long enough!

I'm pretty sure the current state of the Town Centre puts many visitors off anyway! I live in town and avoid it at all costs.

Please councilor miller don't spend millions on a sixth form college just continue the theme of the pals gardens far more appealing to visitors and useful to the residents of Barnsley.

guy fawkes, the council are not spending millions on the sixth form college, it is being paid for by the college...further education colleges came out of public funding in the early 90's and as a result they raise the money themselves for new buildings.

Did anyone else see the story in fridays chronicle, extend the market and build a new library, council. Then lots of demolition to open up building plots and hope developers come in, so town centre could be even deader than it is now
