Youth Choir Members Return To Town As World Champions

Wednesday July 23 2014

MEMBERS of the Barnsley Youth Choir returned home from Latvia as world champions!

The choir - who appeared on BBC's Look North programme on Tuesday evening - took 44 members to Riga to take part in the 2014 World Choir Games.

They beat off competition from the USA, South Africa and Australia to take the top prize in the category of Popular Choral Music Open Competition.

The result was announced just 12 hours after they defied the odds and finished as runners up in the Gospel Open Competition, giving the Horizon Community College-based singers a double success.

Given that both categories didn't have age restrictions, many of their competitors were adult choirs.

Mat Wright, musical director, said: "These results put the choir and the town on the international map; we have been inundated with people wanting to know more about the place we're based.

"Our aim was to go to the games and give a good account of ourselves on the world stage, so to return having won one category and runners up in the second is beyond our wildest dreams."

My daughter joined when she was just 7 & was well looked after. It was amazing watching her and the others in their concerts at Emmanuel church and Horizon theatre. The choir deserves all it's success! :-)
