Bleak Future For Village's Library

Tuesday July 29 2014

MONK Bretton library is set to close.

The crumbling building - which requires extensive, expensive repairs - has seen the number of visitors plummet over the last year.

A four-week consultation process has started, asking its users how they would be affected if the library closed.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokeswoman, said: "We want to continue to provide a library service for the people who live in Monk Bretton.

"Unfortunately, the current library building is no longer fit for purpose. At this time when the council is facing significant cuts, we simply do not have the funds available."

People can take part in the consultation, which ends on August 9, by picking up a copy from the library.

Don't bother. Hundreds signed a petition to keep the central library open but they didn't listen. It's closing.
Not fit for purpose because it has not been maintained even when the council had money available.

Aww, I went to st Helens school as a child and loved our weekly visit to the library. Well until the school got its own. It's a shame places like this arnt maintained.

This has nothing to do with the central Library MOVING - not closing ( I wish people would post facts)

I am very disapointed in the council considering they said only this year that they had secured all libraries in the borough
