Fines Handed Out For Over-Running Roadworks

Thursday March 22 2012

Barnsley Town Hall Barnsley Town Hall

TOUGH new powers have been handed over to Barnsley Council to allow them to fine companies who don't complete roadworks in an agreed time scale.

The Yorkshire Common Permit Scheme - approved by the government - will mean that anyone doing roadworks will need to apply for a permit in advance and to set conditions on timing, coordination or the amount of road space to be left available to road users during the works. Anyone who breaks the terms will be fined.

Coun Roy Miller said: “Road-works can affect everyone  - any works carried out in the street have the potential to cause disruption depending on how long it lasts, where it is carried out, its scale and potential relation to other activities which may be taking place.”

The scheme applies to all strategic roads - made up of A roads and traffic sensitive roads - around 25 per cent of the town's road network.
