GPs Seek Residents' Views

BARNSLEY GPs are seeking the views of the public on plans to use technology to improve the way dermatology services work across the borough.

The 'teledermatology' proposal means that when you see your doctor with a skin condition, they can carry out their usual examination and, if they think it needs further investigation, a picture of your skin can be sent to specialists at Barnsley Hospital.

This differs from the current service because patients won’t have to attend outpatients for someone to check it out, as this will be done from looking at the photo.

The results from the new service will be back with the GP in a much shorter period, reducing the wait.

Dr Clare Bannon said: "It's important that we provide dermatology services that are easy for people to access.

"We want to improve the experience for patients and make most effective use of the resources we have in Barnsley."

They,ll have to have good photo,s as I should imagine it would be quite difficult to assess skin problems just by looking at pictures. If it works though it will be good to shorten the waiting lists. I would worry about misdiagnoses , leading to incorrect medication being prescribed. Some of the medication ie; roacutane is extremely dangerous, it would be a disaster if this was prescribed after a dodgy photo.

Pics are good idea but they'll need to be good so they can get right treatment Dermatologist department are great it's is a longer wait for older children and adults luckily my son got seen with in 2 weeks as he needed emergency appointment he was about 10 weeks old been diagnosed with survea atopic ezcema after few months he's got bandage wraps and lots of cream infection can be a pain as he's 7 months old now and probably had more antibiotics than Iv had all my life so it's important to get the right treatment for skin conditions as some are really painful

If the camera does not have a macro feature then it's doubtful the images would be of much value. Taking ultra close ups is beyhond most normal cameras.
