OVER 5,000 people from Barnsley were admitted to hospital in 12 months due to alcohol dependence problems.

The latest figures for the borough from the Health and Social Care Information Centre for 2012/13 show 3,610 were men and 1,940 women.

The figures also revealed the number of prescription items dispensed for the treatment of alcohol dependence was 167,486.

HSCIC chairman Kingsley Manning said the figures highlighted the impact alcohol dependence has on the NHS and said the rise in prescribing alcohol dependence drugs was "striking".

There was a great service that used to help people start their treatment in hospital then finish it at home..saving bed days and money, then in their wisdom they got rid of the service and as a result people staying in longer. Makes no sense

So many complaints about how much it costs to treat alcohol dependant people. MASSIVE TAXES are paid by people that consume alcohol. We all know it is bad for us, so why do the government not BANN production stop imports then the problem will not be there. Those suffering can be treated and the younger generation cannot start it. Exactly the same with tobacco products.

They keep going on about cigs in shops having plain packets and no advertising of them , but you see supermarkets and shops advertising on special offers and on tv too about alcohol , but it's a big killer and cost nhs more money than anyone smoking cigs or even canabis as guy Fawkes as said , it's got to be stopped all that advertising on cheap deals and on alcohol it's self . it needs banning and stop going about canabis and cigs , I don't drink , smoke cigs or use canabis but you don't need to , to see whats happening in the news all the time .

Booze is like any other drug people get dependant on it, jobs are lost house holds and families are wrecked even prison for some yet for most of us it's a chance to socialise abuse we all do it but for some its a habit that needs compassion and a lot of understanding

Make the multi million pound making brewery's pay the cost,if they or the government gave a toss about the social, physical and mental damage alcohol abuse causes the prices should go up a pint 8.00 spirits the same ,also hold corner shops and the multi million pound making supermarkets carry the blame and financial responsibility too.
