New Cancer Campaign Launched

Tuesday June 10 2014

A NEW campaign has been launched to ensure Barnsley's residents are aware of relatively unknown cancer threats.

NHS Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has teamed up with Barnsley Hospital to bring awareness about head and neck cancer throughout June and early July.

Dr Nick Balac, GP and chair of Barnsley CCG, said: "A lot of people are aware of the main cancers but head and neck cancer is a silent killer and creeps up on people.

"In Barnsley we have found that people as young as 30 are being affected by the disease, so we are developing a campaign to raise more awareness and encourage people to get checked out earlier."

Lisa Sanderson, a head and neck cancer specialist from Barnsley Hospital, said: "A campaign like this is long overdue. As the symptoms of head and neck cancer can present as common ailments such as sore throats, hoarseness or swollen glands, people tend to treat them as such.

"By raising awareness we hope that people will visit their GP, allowing for an earlier diagnosis which leads to a better prognosis."

Look out for the team in the town centre on Wednesdays on June 11, 18, 25 and July 2. Click here for more information.

My dad died with throat cancer after years of smoking. It was the worst thing Iv ever seen. The treatment is almost unbearable too. He had all the symptoms as above and he pushed them to one side, until, after all the treatment it was still too late. This campaign is good news to all. Its said that mobile phones are nothing to do with head cancers, but anyone with sense will use them only as needed. They didnt think cigs caused cancer at first, now its been proven they do. Its not worth the risk, keep the phones for hand held usage.
