BARNSLEY lad John Stones said he will "never forget" his England debut at Wembley.

Stones, who missed out on Roy Hodgson's 23-man World Cup squad after being named on the standby list, appeared in the national side's warm-up matches against Peru and Ecuador.

The defender, from Thurlstone, made his full international debut two days after his 20th birthday as a late substitute in England's 3-0 victory over Peru.

The former Penistone Grammar pupil - who made 28 appearances for the Reds before leaving for Everton for £3 million last year - will now watch from home as England's tournament gets underway on Saturday night.

"It has given me that hunger to keep on improving and hopefully, when that next England squad comes around, I'll get the call," he said.

"I'll never forget that moment at Wembley and it still feels surreal. To make my debut two days after my birthday as well topped off the week. It was nice to have the family down and it was a massive day for me."
