Mi Card Saved But Restrictions Will Be Added

THE Mi Card will not be axed but usage times could be restricted and charges added under new budget announcements, We Are Barnsley can reveal.

The scheme offers free bus travel across Barnsley for under-18s between 9am-9pm and on weekends but under the next round of budget cuts, the council says it has to axe some of the £2 million it costs to run the Mi Card scheme.

The council is considering three options to make the Mi Card more viable – one is to charge an all day fare of 30p, even at weekends, to anyone using one.

The second proposal is to reduce Mi Card hours to 5 – 9pm on school days and weekends with a 60p fare at all other times.

Finally it is considering a 20p fare at Mi Card hours only, between 9am – 9pm weekdays and anytime at weekends.

A council spokesman said no firm decision had yet been made but those were the proposals that had been put forward.

A council spokesman said: "There's been a few enquiries about the future of Mi Card, following a decision at the Cabinet meeting to retain it, at a reduced level, for at least one more year. The options will be put before the youth council for their opinions before a final decision is made."

Latest figures show that around 67 per cent of children and young people in Barnsley use the cards.

My daughter has 2 buses to catch on way home from school so changing hours to 5-9pm is going to mean a daily charge of £1.20 if you charge the 60p rate. I drop her off in morning on way to work but I can't pick her up as I finish later than she does. So that will be £6 per week for her just to get home from school. And not here isn't a free school bus for her to use that goes our way.

i find this realy pathetic , first stopping swimming now charging for buses ,  its going to cost nearly 7 pound a week to get to school and back

Only time my daughter uses her Mi card is to come home from school and at weekends, in my opinion they should not have to pay to get to school on a school bus - but hey they are taking money from us all over the place so why should this be any different - they want to try living on our wages and surviving on a low income, ok so they charge 20p at weekends I don't have a problem with that if they need to save money, but the council have been given £800 thousand to spend on traveller sites, what about all the people who pay council tax and insurance we have to have cuts and wage reductions etc,,,,, ok rant over.

It should be 7.30 till 5.30 weekdays only even a small fee of 20p would be acceptable and half fare or 50p other times. Then bring back free swimming or half price swim so it's fair to all. Because at the minute teens use their passes to use buses advance youth club whichs selfishly made the cost sky rocket causing us to loose out on the swimming function of the pass.

I would like to see kids that are wearing a school uniform receiving free travel using a Mi card  and then a small charge for weekend usage. This way I know my child will be able come home safely from school especially on dark winter nights.

Less money on rubbish ie traveling sites an maybe us that pay lots of tax wouldn't suffer. My daughters school dinners cost me enough as it is without uppin the bus fares

The mi cards want stopping completely and the council tax rates want reducing. Absolutely sick to death of paying out £100+ a month. People should pay for the services they require and stop relying on the state to provide...

I think it should be operated between 7.30 & 5.30, on weekdays, for free, for the children that use it to get to/from school. & 50p for the rest of the time just like any other child fare. & as for any other activities it is used for, just charge half the normal price. I think the MIcard gets taken advantage of personally...

Should be free from 7.30 -5pm weekdays all other times and weekends should be 50p

Keep it simple, apply a flat rate (20p or whatever)  it is fairer to everyone and easier to understand and bus drivers won't get abused when telling someone the price is higher than it was when the last bus came 10 minutes ago.

from a college student point of view, why should it affect school children and college students only, I think that all fares should go back to 40p for everybody with a pass, including school children, college student and pensioners.......

My daughter only uses her Mi card to come home from school and not at any other time, because they keep merging all the school into the so called 'super' schools she has no option but to go to and from school by bus - her school is now 5 miles away. The Mi card has halved her weekly bus fares, people keep saying scrap them but when i was at school.....a very long time ago (ok 27yrs ago) i got free bus travel to and from school because i lived over 3 miles away so free bus travel to school isn't a recent thing that came in with the Mi cards. By all means introduce a reduced rate but make sure that it covers the main school times otherwise what use is it. Introduce a reduced charge for evenings and weekends and keep school times free. They merge the schools therefore they should make it easier for kids to attend them but more importantly get home safely from them, by free travel home if she misses the school bus and has to catch 2 service buses she can get home safely. There is so much money wasted on other things and as stated above we're taxed every which way we turn, the money we pay out as a working family i think we are entitled to the £2.50 a week free bus travel from school.

its about time they reduce what we have to pay out befor you start givein money to the likes of mi card theres beter things that barnsley council can do with the money over paid poll tax get a life we dont abuse that because we dont get  it mi card is in some cases abused by some kids just going one stop or travel to town center after school you see loads of kids around the interchange and if they had to pay they would not be there and there would be less cause for police around the town i seen it its true so get rid or restict it and make them pay after school hours

Barnsley bus station is the worst bus station for kids hanging around you don't see it in any of the other bus stations us bus drivers go to and its all because of the free travel they get
