SAINSBURY'S hopes a decision on its plans to convert the B&Q store at Stairfoot is now just weeks away.

The building, off Bleachcroft Way, is currently restricted to the sale of DIY products only but the supermarket giant is hopeful this will be lifted by Barnsley Council next month.

It submitted its plans in January and 400 jobs could be created.

The 73,500sq ft site would include a new store entrance, toilets and cash machines, a cafe and mezzanine level and a reconfigured car park to improve traffic circulation.

It will also include bakery, delicatessen, meat and fish and hot food counters.

A spokesperson from the supermarket said: "At the moment a date is yet to be confirmed, but we anticipate that it may be in July and we'll be sure to keep the community updated."

She said Sainsbury's was 'thrilled' with the response received during a public consultation, with more than 85 per cent of respondents supporting the plans.

She added: "Many residents have told us that our plans to create up to 400 new Sainsbury's jobs, providing the opportunity for local people to gain nationally accredited qualifications, will provide a real boost for Barnsley."

Good luck Sainsburys, I really hope you're successful.

Do the right thing for a change BMBC and let them come.

Save me having to go to Wakefield. They have also offered to interview any B&Q staff who want to remain working at the premises.

Yes it all sounds good in theory until a Saturday afternoon when Stairfoot is gridlocked with traffic! Stairfoot roundabout is horrendous as it is without another huge supermarket! Would love a Sainsbury's in Barnsley just not there!
