Rubbish Collections: What Do You Think?

Tuesday May 13 2014

Hickleton Terrace Hickleton Terrace

We've had scores of WABers contact us over the last few months regarding rubbish collections - and we want to know your thoughts.

WABer Jessica May Holmes sent us this picture of Hickleton Terrace, Thurnscoe, saying that the bins had not been emptied for four and a half weeks.

She said: "I have rung the council four times and all that keeps getting said is they're going to get emptied soon."

Have your bins been collected lately? When was the last time they were collected?

Comment in the box below and we will forward the list to Barnsley Council.

Our bins are constantly being emptied a day late which is not too bad but we live on a busy school street that isn't very big so leaving the bins out for two full days to be collected can become a problem when children are moving them and cars are hitting them when trying to park up etc, nightmare.

Reply Posted by Mick Clay on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 14:10
Since they have changed collections and bin colours theres been no end of confusion, not only on th household side but the refuse collectors too. They give you certain dates and don't do it until day after.

Does not matter what anyone thinks off anyone place or village .....when U pay nearly a thousand a year in council tax your entitled to have your councils services I.e getting your waste bins emptied

I live in town centre iv had nothing but problems trying to get my bin. They didn't empty mine for 4 weeks and then complained at me for rubbish Pilling up outside. It's ridiculous

Reply Posted by Keli on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 14:27
If we had the bins to put the right rubbish in to start with that might be helpful!! I ordered my new bin 10 weeks ago an was told 6 to 8 there are only so many times I can visit the tip!!

Reply Posted by Margaret Saunders on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 14:31
Our bins have always been emptied from the rear of our properties after they have been emptied at the front on the main road now instead of coming round the back straight away like they used to they disappear for about 5 hours and then come back ridiculous

Reply Posted by jenny on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 14:39
we didnt get told about the new system until we complained that our bins hadnt been emptied, then got told all the recycling had been swapped about and to put paper in the white bags provided. still waiting for a white bag and its been 2 months and they dont take the bins that are left out when theyre supposed to be. its pathetic and we're sick of it. its about time the council got it sorted out

Reply Posted by Scott on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 15:11
BMBC are a set off pillocs, I needed to take some rubbish to the tip because my bins overflowing and because I took it down in a trailer ( that is smaller than boot of my car ) they would not let me tip it without a permit, this is why people are tipping there rubbish down in the woods, BMBC really need to pull there fingers out of there ass.

I have commented and looked at the comments made to WAB since this new collection regime was introduced the only conclusion is that the majority of people are not happy with it. Councillor Miller is obviously an ostrich burying his head in the sand saying it is a success. WAB why have you only just brought this to light after all this time. Will councillor Miller & his cronies revert back to the old collections I doubt it not yet heard of any politician admiting a mistake. Pursue this WAB ask him to reply to all these comments if he has the guts to.

the white bags are useless for paper. and the small blue bin as been overfull for over 2 week with cardboard. also brown bin not large enough to go a month with bottles and cans for a family of 4 and we get 1 bin emptied a day late each week. so more people are stopping recycling. very green thinking barnsley council?

Reply Posted by jackie youel on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 15:54
my grey bin should have been emptied today ,its almost 4pm n no sign of bin men ..guess there a day late yet again ,everyones bins are out blocking the pavements making it difficult for old people and mums with prams but at least the rats will eat well again tonight ....come on BMBC get your **** sorted !!!!

Reply Posted by Onlyme on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 15:57
Grey bin due to be empty Friday 9/5/14 . Came Saturday 10/5/14 .otherwise ok

Reply Posted by ken on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 15:59
The money they save on bin collections will will be needed to to be spent on rat infestation due to overflowing bins

Reply Posted by George on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 16:30
Too many bins on rounds to empty not enough bin wagons and poor pay.

Reply Posted by Bill on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 16:35
Having to wait 4 weeks for brown bin to be emptied due to new system. Put bin out and guess what ? yes you guessed never turned up. 3 DAYS later arrived to empty bin, but most residents took them back in and the bin wagon speeds so you never have time to get the bin out. rang BMBC but can never get through. BMBC needs voting for the worst cock - up when the old system worked fine,, EVERYBODY I speak to and the majority think the system is RUBBISH. so how come MILLER thinks this is a success.. WHAT A JOKE.

Reply Posted by Sarah on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 17:24
Our bins are also being emptied a day late, but as we are not supposed to put bins out having them blocking the pavements what are we supposed to do? It seems like everyone is having similar problems some even worse!
This has been a farse since they changed it all, we didnt have the replacement bins in time either so I had a month of no where to put my cardboard

Reply Posted by Anna on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 17:43
It all boils down to the lovely people running our country cutting costs where they shouldn't be cut. Less wagons & men on our council than surrounding councils, all bonus & OT stopped (can't blame them for not working for Nowt) chief exec knows all this but still cuts jobs etc cos of gov regulations. So now all the political leaflets are dropping thru letter boxes ask them wanting your vote if they intend to rectify the problem..... And answer will be no cos ultimately it'll be upto mr Cameron - who's bins get emptied daily by his staff

Reply Posted by Brian on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 16:24
Don't talk ridiculous. The people at Barnsley council are solely responsible for waste disposal/recycling, not national government. Barnsley council decides how it spends it's money and it should be doing better. Much better.

Ordered blue bin and larger brown bin february and still waiting despite many phone calls. Gonna stop recycling cardboard if dont get one soon

Reply Posted by Katie on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 17:57
Still waiting for new larger bins (blue and brown) and a whie paper sack. Phoned them loads of times since February but still not got. Original bins are way too small to last a month. Not happy at all. The changes in collections are also causing problems. Instead of all recycling being taken on the same day, we are left with the overspill for weeks.

Reply Posted by B on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 18:01
I live down low valley and the recycling bins are always late to be emptied, collection day is Thursday but they have never been on a Thursday, once it's been a day late, other times have been on the following Monday, it's awful I have a baby in a pram and walking down the street takes the p*#$, always having to stop to move bins just to get past. It's ok for the council to forget to empty our bins but if we forgot to pay our council tax we'd get fined.

missed our green bin this week , missed it last time but came day after, blue bin not big enough , brown bin not big enough and there is only me an the wife , new collection system just is not working . Barnsley Council listen to the people.!!!!

Reply Posted by Purcy on Tuesday May 13 2014 at 19:52
It would have been nice if the changes had been publicised a little better. How about a sticker or leaflet listing the collections, which bin is for what and what week we are on when.
I managed to find out some of this on the web page but not on a Barnsley MBC web page. Thanks Barnsley waste management!

I am in Wombwell and I must say that before the changes at the beginning of the year I had no complaints but now it's gone mad my husband wrote all the dates down on our calendar to make sure he got it right and he ordered new bins he has phoned twice to find out where they are with no success the white bag has been left out for days before its picked up and the other bins are overflowing I hope someone takes the initiative to sort it out

Time for a change at BMBC. This is the latest in a line of balls up's BMBC have made over the years.

Vote for change, don't let these muppets in again!

Ordered new bins, still waiting! Bins not emptied the first day new system started so had to wait another four weeks. If you phone up you just get automated message, absolutely pathetic, only thing wrong with old system was rubbish not emptied weekly. Don't we deserve a better service considering how much we pay?

Reply Posted by sid on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 09:09
Well, one good comment amongst all the slating. But,I'm afraid its about the waste collection for business,s. I've found them to be excellent. Prompt,on time and as I recently found helped with a problem I had, within 3 days. Private not so good. Some scroat torched two of my bins, not got new yet. Said 6 weeks!

Reply Posted by jen on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 11:48
WE ARE BARNSLEY should investigate what happens to all our sorted and separated recycled rubbish bins when they get emptied at the depot as all the sorting and all the money wasted on new bins for different waste to be recycled and different vans to collect different bins are all actually dumped in one container and not sorted for recycling at all. I suggest WE ARE BARNSLEY ask the council why we need all the bins when its only cardboard the council get revenue for and the rest of the rubbish goes in the same place for landfill an obvious waste of public money....

Reply Posted by Fred on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 13:46
I agree jen, some of my recycling bins were overflowing the other week so I decided to take the excess waste( paper and plastic) down to the tip. When I asked one of the council men who worked there where to put the paper he said "just throw it into the cardboad only container"?????

I have to wait 8 weeks for a bigger cardboad an plastic bin! Nice work BMBC!

Reply Posted by anon1 on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 14:14
I ordered my bigger recycling bins on the 31st January as soon as I received my white bag. They've just turned up today!! But guess what? They are already full up due to filling them with bags already waiting to go in. They should have sent all new recycling bins out before bringing in the change. Whoever arranged the change needs sacking. Monkeys could have arranged it better!!

By the way when u phoned last week to find out where my bins were they told me that whatever bin is due to be collected you can also put upto 2 bin liners next to it containing the corre,t rubbish and they will take them. Not sure if the bin men will though!!

Reply Posted by mama4 on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 14:30
Rubbish collections are exactly theat rubbish collections.......collected more often than not the day after stipulated which gives the idiots of society a great opportunity to set fire to them on their way home from the pubs in the early hours of the morning for wonderous amusement ...COME ON BMBC SORT IT!!!!!!!

Reply Posted by Lee on Wednesday May 14 2014 at 16:00
Since new system as started our grey bins have never been emptied on the day.they manage to empty the recycled bins on the day! So what are the council doing. I live in Cudworth n they seem to empty one end of the estate but because we are at the other end of the estate we get missed. Phoning every week to complain. Wot a farce the new system is.

A bet sir houghton gets is bins emptied on time without delay BMBC nothing's changed look after them at top
Or an a bet he hasn't took a cut this year or any year.

Reply Posted by steve on Thursday May 15 2014 at 02:33
Steve Houghton lives round the corner from me I can assure his bin collections are just as much of a cock up as the rest of Barnsley

Reply Posted by steve on Thursday May 15 2014 at 02:31
Have to agree with most of the comments don't know if i'm coming or going iv taken to dragging every bin on a Tuesday night and see what's left on Friday recycling gone out the window as the bins just wont take the amount over the period they are expected to Total farce but that's nothing new for Barnsley council I guess once all the road repairs are complete we can expect someone to dig them all up as per normal

Reply Posted by anon on Thursday May 15 2014 at 09:25
Hey Steve, hope your telling your neighbour all this. He has the power and the need to make it change. He surely must be just as peed off as everyone else. He needs to go in and sort it,seems like his staff can't.

Reply Posted by Danny parker on Thursday May 15 2014 at 10:10
Since the changes no one has a clue what goes in what bin and what day they get emptied, another cock up by the overpaid idiots in charge of our once great town. Sack the idiots who sit there scratching the balls saying what a good idea a change is....bring back the old system

Reply Posted by G on Thursday May 15 2014 at 10:55
I ordered my new bins on 14th January. 4 months later and I still don't have them and they're now ignoring any emails/phonecalls I make regarding them. What's the point in changing the bin collection service when you don't actually provide people with the necessary equipment they need to take part in the new service. I'd love to know who the people are who they apparently surveyed to say they wanted the new collections because so far I haven't heard one person say it's a good idea.

Im in monk bretton and my brown bin was put out the night before due to be collected they rocked up following day and missed mine even tho cctv shows the men looking at it then leavin it. So brown bin emptied every 4 weeks been 6 weeks now and still on street surrounded by bags n bags of recycling cos me greys gettin full. emailed em they just ignore emails. Ramg em they just said its been put on missed bin list. Absolute joke. 4 weeks for brown bin is too long as it is

Plastic waste bins put out and the following morning a bin lad came to get them only to be told by the driver to get back on the van. Off they went further down the street but didnt come back they went straight passed. It was the bank holiday weekend, so obviously the driver wanted to get finished early!. After the weekend i phoned to complain to be told the bins had been missed. No!! they wen't missed they were ignored. 10 days later the bins were emptied. Promised response from BMBC didnt happen... no surprises there.

Reply Posted by John on Thursday May 15 2014 at 12:14
I'm all for recycling but I think having to have 3 separate wheelie bins is taking the p1ss. Takes up half my backyard.

Reply Posted by Ann on Thursday May 15 2014 at 13:02
Michelle Law .. Please realise that only 0.50p a week of your council tax goes towards bin collections .. The rest of your money is used for police, ambulance, etc ect ....

Reply Posted by sid on Friday May 16 2014 at 10:43
It was still 50p a week before though Ann and it used to work. It is chick feed at that price granted but it doesn't make the new system right.

Reply Posted by Mona on Monday September 15 2014 at 12:58
and your argument is??? 50p is 50p and it's a payment made in good faith. BMBC are defaulting on a contract made with council tax payers. If the public defaulted on a payment they would be fined....No excuse is good enough.

Reply Posted by Dawn on Friday May 16 2014 at 08:50
£24.00 a year on a service that is rubbish!

Get your act together BMBC, im still waiting for my bigger bins! This hasn't been well thought of at all!

Reply Posted by J. on Saturday May 17 2014 at 08:43
Looking at all the above comments I completely agree. It worked so much better before the change! Been waiting since Feb for some larger bins to accommodate my family's recycling.. All you get are automated emails from waste management assuring you that someone will deal with your request shortly.. 3 months later and numerous emails and I still haven't heard a thing. Come on BMBC.. REALLY??

Reply Posted by t on Thursday May 22 2014 at 23:40
well its now looking better ,as most of the rubbish has been removed, and not by the council..An old metal drum was provided by a local garage,to use as a burning bin,and with the help of a few residents and friends most of it was safely incinerated.today the residents finally got a bin collection.this was the first in 8 weeks.when will they get thier next.

Reply Posted by Jim on Tuesday May 27 2014 at 18:02
We're asked not to block the pavements when putting our bins out, yet the binmen .leave them all over the place after they empty them

Reply Posted by Mr D Smith on Tuesday May 27 2014 at 18:16
I ordered a new grey bin back in February because it was split down side now it slip down other side so phoned up to ask when I would get the one I ordered I said what would happen if it slit open and dumped rubbish on highway I was told the dustbin men would sweep it up I don't think so they have not got time to empty on correct day anyway

Reply Posted by Rubydoo on Tuesday May 27 2014 at 19:55
Can we have some figures please BMBC, to show how much overtime all this is costing. Get your act together, the streets look a mess with all these bins left out for days.

Reply Posted by Jonno on Friday June 13 2014 at 09:28
Grey bins not emptied on estate in Lundwood. Two days late and no idea when likely to be emptied. Contact at council office just a recording that there are problems with the service. Do we continue to leave them out or take them back in???? No body knows ..........
