A SHOP and a restaurant has opened in Barnsley College and is being run by students in a bid to help them gain real life work experience.

Funky Dory and Crumbs are staffed by students with learning difficulties, additional needs and disabilities to help train them. The gift shop sells items made by students and other local designer-makers.

Spokesman Jess Griggs said: “Working in Funky Dory is a great way for our learners to gain the experience and confidence they need to go on to be successful in the future and the students I teach in here have grown enormously in confidence and ability over such a short period of time.”

The shop and cafe runs alongside two existing commercial ventures run at the college by students - Zest Restaurant and Images Salon.

Nothing new really, Longley Park Sixth Form College in Sheffield has done similar to this for ages!

Well I think it's a great idea.

What a great learning curve for these young adults.Posotive thoughts are needed David, just because it's happening elsewhere doesn't mean it's not good for the students of Barnsley. .

The running of the shop by students itself is not a new venture, this was done previously in a seperate building before the new building went up; helping to enterprise students' work is the new venture. Glad to hear it's done in other colleges, we are not in competition, we merely stand to develop the learners who come to Barnsley College and the opportunities available to them.

Yes, Funky Dory does employ students on an Earn to Learn Scheme during the college holidays.
