Hospital's Financial Black Hole Grows

THE financial black hole at Barnsley Hospital has grown to £7.4 million - and it could still rise.

Initially thought to be in the region of £2.3m, a report given at a board meeting at the hospital revealed the figure has now trebled.

Hospital bosses have admitted they do not know how the shortfall has come about but it is not thought to be as a result of theft by an individual or group.

In an effort to find out what had happened, they brought in two firms of auditors to comb through the hospital's accounts dating back to 2012/13 to discover what went wrong.

Diane Wake, the hospital's chief executive, said: "We have commenced this new financial year with a deficit of at least £7.4m. However, we expect that this position could worsen.

"Exact figures are being confirmed as part of our investigations, which we expect to conclude shortly."

The hospital is also being investigated by NHS watchdog Monitor over the financial concerns and for failing to meet targets for patient waiting times in its accident and emergency department.

"We would like to reassure patients that quality patient care remains a priority," Ms Wake added. "We are continuing to provide the same high level of care our patients need and deserve."

How on earth can so much be unaccounted for the whole board and top level management should be sacked for this malpractice. Unbelievable that in this day and age when every penny is supposedly accounted for and reported that the chief exec can sit there shrugging her shoulders. I have no doubt lives will be lost as a direct result of this disgraceful mismanagement.

Its obvious that BDGH did not have eneough money to start with. That does not excuse this terrible state of affairs though. How will they ever pull that lot back. Why was it not seen before it got so bad. SACK ALL OF THEM AND NO PENSIONS. They should never be allowed such important positions again. What a mess. As always the patients will suffer. Disgusting. You said it well Ray.

if the diddling didnt go with tax avoidance there would be more nurses a better health service and probably no blackhole in the finances of bdgh and probably a lot more hospitals.

It makes you wonder whats happening how many Chief Execs has Barnsley DGH had over the last few years. Massive. salaries and pensions. If me and you run our personal affairs this way we would be in court for alleged fraud.

Yes we would be in serious trouble. They should be prosecuted. They will not be though. They have spent money where there was none to spend. Its deplorable, has the overspend gone on patient care. Its not long since over 2 million was spent on A&E of course it was needed but the mind boggles. What angers me the most is the fact that our NHSwas the envy of the world and now we are scraping for standard care. The amount of taxes collected by the government our Health service should want for nothing. There has also been talk of people having to pay health Insurance. People have paid NI & taxes for years, So where will the NI contributions go. Its a political minefield but all we ever get from the government is lies and coverups.

How come no one is made accountable though? The chief execs just slip out the back door and the new one come in the front one, Almost certainly on a better salary than the predecessor. I'm absolutely astounded by this one.
