POLICE have appealed for information after two elderly women were robbed by bogus gas workers.

In the first incident at 2.20pm on April 23, a man called at the front door of a house on Goldthorpe Road, Goldthorpe, stating he was from the gas board and was working on some gas in the local area and needed to turn off the boiler.

When he said he needed to turn off the resident's boiler, the 84-year-old directed him to where it was.

The man, who was holding several sheets of paper, then asked for a cup of tea. The woman went into the kitchen, but the man then appeared at the doorway and said he’d left something in another house and would be back soon.

Around 20 minutes later, the woman noticed a money bag containing her £62 bingo winnings and a blue case with her glasses inside had been taken from her bag at the side of the sofa.

The offender is believed to have called at three other houses before he reached his victim, who was left shaken by the incident.

He is described as a white male, 5ft 4in tall, around 28 years old, slim with dark, curly hair and a local accent. He was wearing dark clothing and a sleeveless, green high-visibility jacket.

In the second incident, a retired woman at Judy Row, Monk Bretton, had just returned home at 6.30pm on April 24 with her tea of fish and chips when she was duped by a man.

He claimed he worked for 'the gas’ and asked to check the heating. He searched all the rooms then asked for a cup of tea, but later stated he was going next door and left through the front door.

Afterwards the woman discovered that bags in the living room and bedroom had been disturbed and a purse with £300 and bank cards was missing, along with a box of 200 cigarettes.

The offender, who was carrying papers, was not in uniform, but had a card or badge around his neck.

He is described as a white male, in his 20s, 5ft 5in to 5ft 8in tall, thin, with thick facial stubble and scruffy, dark hair. He spoke with a local accent and wore jeans and a jumper.

If anyone has any information about the Goldthorpe matter they should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 574 of April 23.

For the Monk Bretton distraction burglary call 101 and quote incident number 157 of April 24.

Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

I dont know what happens to people as they age (we,ll be there one day) they seem to get more trusting and naive. I called to see my mam one day and there was a stranger sat there. He had cadged a cuppa and a cig! He was from free loft insulation (which was actually true),but he was sat reclining comfortably with her as if they were best mates. Mam got a roasting from me,but to be honest Im sure she would let anyone in still. After this report I,ll try to instill it into her again that she mustnt let anyone in again. Sad,bad world. The oldies watch the news, read the local papers but still are gullible for some unknown reason. Sounds like these two robbers are working together, hope they rot in hell.

Hope they don't catch them and send them to a comfortable prison, hope someone catches them and gives them a bloody good hiding, break both there legs then there arms then throw them into the nearest fast flowing river, fed up of these do gooders ways,it's about time the soft gloves came off before it's too late, and if that's too much to bear for some ,then just shoot them art et rooerd !.
