Town Centre's 'Mushroom' And Plinth To Be Removed

Monday April 14 2014

THE plinth in Peel Square and the 'mushroom' in Cheapside will finally be removed this summer.

Stalls in the outdoor market will move into the main precinct ready for Christmas and will remain there for at least three years.

There will be 40 fixed stalls running from Peel Square by the steps to the underground toilets, through to Queen Street, into May Day Green and Cheapside, where they will stretch as far as the WH Smith and the O2 store.

The square's plinth and the 'mushroom' seating canopy in Cheapside will be removed to make space for the stalls and allow emergency vehicles to get between them.

A council spokesman said: "We're all really excited about this new scheme. We're doing this - the council. It's not a private company, it's not dependent on this or that, it is happening.

"It's really positive for Barnsley and I can't wait to see work start."

It needs more than the mushroom n other thing removing! Every shop wants knocking down and starting again! Ridiculous how many cheap knock off shops, greggs & bookies there is! What's up with clothes, shoes, music or homeware shops?? River island,hNm,MCDONALDS, cooplands just anything people want to go to or shop in! It's embarrassing! How people walk round sheffield or Doncaster and then barnsley don't sit on mushroom laughing at state if it is beyond me!!!!!!

I've read this post over and over again. If BMBC are getting exited about 40 outdoor stalls the god help us all.

Sad to see mushroom go. I have spent many hours there over the years. Chatting to friends. Or chatting to folk just in passing. Well if it creates an improvement in town then so be it. And rightly so what will they do 40 stalls is not much. Need to generate interest in the town and bring business back. It is possible. Need right people to do the job.

End of an era - you used to be able to climb up inside it back in the eighties. No longer can we say that we ate hagenbachs gingerbread men while sitting on a mushroom.

The only mushroom I would like to see in Barnsley town centre is the after effects of flattening it with a nuclear bomb and starting completely from scratch! Its an absolute dump! Pubs, poundshops, charity shops and Greggs.......sort of sums it up! Answer = jump in my car (or spend a few £ on a train which is similar to the cost of parking in Barnsley for the day) and go to Meadowhall!
